One that got away ?

Just rebuilt a crank from a low miles '79 machine when the factory experimented (on the bike buying public  :o ) with caged ball centre mains. Never seen one before and did not really expect to ever see one as I figured they must surely have all been fixed by now.

It was said at the time when you switched motor off the centre main bearing balls could be heard gently dropping to the bottom of the races....

Bloody hell Keith.....never thought I would ever see one of those grenades (even in a picture).

Got to worry where the rest of the ball bearings have gone (or is it just the cage that got chewed up and spat out?)  :o

Pete

Caged ball bearing, so the cage has been spat out somewhere.

I would hope that all the balls are still in there as the other main bearings have probably held the inner and outer race fairly true.

Why did the factory try to change a winning formula from the roller bearings?

Trying to reduce noise! (as if bearings would be heard above the exhaust & inlet racket  :P :P )

T'was a bit of a cock-up  ;)

Keith,

Can you recognise the make of the bearings?

I've just finished re-furbing a 1200 crank that had german-made SKF ball bearings with a riveted(!?) plastic cage fitted.  Also thought it might have been one that slipped through the net..... :o

That was nearly the tell-tale on my '80 Jota.  Turning the engine by hand whilst checking valve clearances, that ominous click-tick sound was heard.  What fun!  :(

Hi Piet,

SKF bearings altho' they had steel cages, little bit of cage still gallantly holding one ball  :) pulled another bit out of the slinger and the rest who knows, only got the crank not the whole motor.

Keith,

Any damage on the slingers?

I was wondering why the slingers on the crank I repaired were so torn up..... probably bits of cage on their way out.

piet

I replaced the slinger on the web adjacent to the bust up bearing, if you study the pic you can see where the cage has fretted away at the sheetmetal. Would probably have been OK to go again but I have a bunch of new slingers here and I'd made a tool for swageing them on so I thought I may as well...
