Sad news , but not entirely unexpected , he looked very frail at Donington Classic Festival earlier this year .
Was just getting interested in motorcycle racing in 1968 and remember the Read / Ivy feud being one of the big headlines back then .
Yamaha were keen for reigning 125 champon Ivy to contest ( and win ) the 250 title as well , which had been lost to Honda the previous year .
Former 250 champion Read thought Yamaha were favouring new boy Ivy over him , and wrote to the FIM informing them that Yamaha were issuing team orders , forcing Yamaha to back down and give greater support to Read , the open secret being that Read would take the 125 title and Ivy the 250 .
After securing the 125 title , Read decided to disregard team orders from that pont on , and take the 250 title as well ( which he did ) , telling Ivy if he wanted the 250 title he would have to fight for it , the whole business souring his relationship with Yamaha , and virtually ensuring he would get no further Yamaha works support in the future .
Below is a shot of Read and Ivy " racing " each other at the `68 East German GP on their 250 V4 Yamahas... Phil opened up a twelve second lead over Bill Ivy , pulled into the pits and told his mechanic to splash some water around to make it look as though he had to stop to top up the radiator , rejoined the race , caught up with Bill again , passed and re-passed him a few times just for the fun of it , and then slowed down to let Ivy cross the line in front of him by just a wheel length .
The crowd were on their feet , cheering them on , under the impression a real race was taking place....
