Plug colour

Possibly check the copper gaskets at the headers, for easy things first, Rob.

Seen burnt copper from gas bypass, which lead to a futile engine out and redo head, all because the copper crush gaskets had failed ( previous owner...not me...true i would not reuse annealed copper gaskets crushed to flat...true.. honest and for true, males can lie with superior skill ). j
 
Other than not being a 1200, my 3c has a very similar engine configuration, and nobody has ever suggested I run 9s. Is this common on Redax motors?
In this case Vince it is for higher demands on the motor, your fine on 8's, relax...Ommmmm dont forget triangle hands same time, stops plugs from fouling... known old mechanics folk lore....j
 
I'm sure there are enough hot triple owners on here to know whether 8s or 9s suit. Having seen how easily pistons can self-ventilate once the 'normal' riding and cruising turns to high-heat fanging I'm very wary of hot plugs. A big diff between a stock 1200 on 8.5:1 and a hottie on 10.5:1. If you potter around all day on minimal throttle and low revs you're not getting into the risk zone.
 
My rebuit motor has done about 15000 kays, mostly road kays and about 2500 track kays running on 8s with no signs of damage so I wouldn't worry about the plugs for normal riding. I will continue using 8s for road use as I brought a box of them so I plan to use them.
Plugs have always had a good colour after general use. Those 2500 track kays, [8 track days] I haven't put a spanner on the bike apart from 1 chain adjustment and oil changes. Don't even remember if the plugs have been out in all that time. The bike has been running fantastic.
It's only because I had the carbs off last week to sort a pilot issue after sitting for a few months and played with the air/fuel settings, also I notice the revs hanging slightly so I removed the plugs for a looksee. There are no signs of an exhaust leak. I'm confident going up on the mains will sort the leanness out. Also will use B9s on track. I checked the ignition and that's spot on. As for the oil on #3 I'll go with Piet's call on the guides.
Unknown replacement head/valves about 12000 kays ago.
My plan at this stage is to fit the 127.5 mains, 20 pilots and drop the needle back to middle and go from there.
Do a bunch of road miles and see how that runs. Without the extreme WOT of a track environment maybe that oil will disappear, maybe not.
Will fit new exhasust gaskets too.
Wait for the next track day and see how it runs and if the oil is still there change the guide seal. If the oil is persistent I'll get the head done, new guides, valves?? and ceramics. Would love to have access to a dyno. Maybe the next trip to Perth I'll trailer the bike up if I'm not jumping on a plane. Usually the only reason I go to Perth!!

On closer inspection I've just noticed
The air fuel mixture jets are different.
1 odd one out, it measures o/a 36.2mm
The other 2 measure 35.3 and 35.5.

That’ll make all sorts of difference to your hang-up, which I was thinking must be an idle issue, rather than main jet.
Regarding your main, a few months ago I spent a day on track with a single cylinder, easier than a triple, and experimented with a pocket full of main jets. Went up in size until I got a slightly sooty plug, and farty and boggy out of a hairpin. Then dropped it until it regained power out of corners. The plug looked darkish, but not black, and definitely not sooty.
Like suspension, go too far in both directions and find the goldilocks point in the middle.
 
Tips are broken off of the two outside mixture screws and are now jammed in the carb body
And they are a right pain in the butt to get out

Will check on Desktop when I get home but that is what it looks like on my phone

Big issue, be thankful it is not the carb body with the Accelerator pump set up
I have over 100 brand new outer carbs, no middle carbs

Actually the tips are in tack. I can feel them come through the carb opening when screwing them in fully. Also have sprayed carb cleaner through them. I've also got a handy little tool I made for removing those tips. I managed to break one when I first installed. Very much aware not to over tighten them.
I just ordered 3 new ones and funnily enough they look different to both of the ones installed.
 
Those fuel/air screws measure middle one 36.5 o/a others 35.2 and 35.5.
I'm surprised I didn't pick them up when tuning. The bike has always run fantastic.
Just think how much better it's going to run now!!!

Andy, that's what I plan to do, easy to do a main jet change with those mikunis.
