Plug fowling from cold

Switch it to Ohms (greek "omega", haven't got one on my keyboard!)

Piet, actually you do (sorta), use All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Character Map and you'll find a really nice Ω that you can copy and paste.
Or if you're feeling geeky you can hold down the Alt key while you type +03A9 (or +2126, which is actually the Windows Ohms symbol, Ω).

Hi All

This is strange I have run my 1200 with NGK iridium plugs the last 25,000 km over 6 years the same plugs never missed a beat.
Put B9ES and the bike start on 2 maybe 3 cyl, very confusing ?

Do you have high compression pistons in your 1200?
B9ES is a colder plug for higher compression engines (like 10:1).
If you run standard (for a 1200) 8:1 pistons then the hotter B8ES is the better choice.
B9s in an 8:1 engine would not run as well, possibly giving the problem you describe.

The Iridium plugs were shown (on a dyno I believe) to lose some power compared to standard plugs. I think it was Paul LeClair who reported this.

I used to occasionally have plug fouling problems even with my IIS ignition.  I found that not letting it spend any time on the choke helped, and never running it for short periods.  The other think I found was that Denso plugs really didn't last, switched to NGKs and much better.

Thanks for this useful info, Grant, when I get back to QLD I'll be changing the choke plungers out in my Mirage so will check to see that B8ESs are installed too..

Always had sooty plugs in my sfc1000, had to renew plugs often, I changed coils, leads, caps, eventually I realised that the float heights were out, but was unable to get them in spec, it was then I bought new float valves, floats which cured it. The old float valves seemed longer and were not all the same,  Could have bought mikunis by the time I had finished,

make sure you have got your plug capons on securely.

seriously cold fouling, never ever run the engine for a few seconds or even a minute or two, aleways get it properly warm, say 15 minutes as minimum, which can be hassle if all you want to do is drive the bike 10 yards up a slope at home (FE).

secondly there are a hell of a lot of fake NKG plugs around which are genuine crap, do a Google search and you will come up with a site that tells you how to identify the fake ones.A few years ago I nearly got caught for some tyres for my Merc which were being sold at ?250 each (not that good a deal, and this gives you confidence) but they were fake Goodyear, the correct ones cost me about ?30 less per corner !
