Hi all
I had my frame powder coated, iam not happy with the colour
Iam going to have it painted jota silver
So can anyone tell me if you can paint over the powder coat
Or do I need to get it blasted
Thanks bear

You can paint over the powder but it would need to be roughed up before painting even then there is no guarantee of good adhesion, speak to your painter about suitable primers. I would be inclined to go back to bare metal and use a polyurethane based paint on top of etch primer. Best way to strip powder coat is to have the frame dipped, blasting is pretty aggressive and the powder coat being quite soft is difficult to shift this can lead to the blasters digging away at the coating but also removing material from the frame tubes adjacent to any stubborn powder coat, a chemical strip will lift the powder then a light blast to clean and key the steel.

Everything that Keith said, personally I prefer to start with bare metal but Davo had success spraying over a newly powder coated frame, same problem as you, silver not right.
He used a 2K urethane. The paint shop he/we used also fills spray cans with any colour of your choice. Being a 2 pac it's a one off application but worth it if you only have a couple of pieces to spray. Much easier than fucking around with spray guns and cleaning etc, though that's the way I do it.

As advised to me by the pro spray painter at the paint store - Use a scouring pad and give it a good all over scruff, spray with the correct silver in a base coat (couple of coats) and then top with a couple of coats of 2K clear.

He reckons powder coat is the best primer you can get.
