Primary chain swap

further to Piet's and Cam's comments

if you are worried about the wear on the cast iron clutch sprocket then just reverse it when reassembling
that means any wear is then on the unloaded backside of the tooth form and you should by rights have unworn loaded teeth to play with

as Piet said, pretty damn rare to see wear on the front sprockets teeth

bloody hell Piet, you are at it again, I was so, so, so close, but enjoy your knowledge hugely, are you writing it all down?

Blimey , it would be like War and Peace...make sure theres plenty of pictures?😁
So Clem, less weight, less noise, more power...you still gonna wait until your triplex collection is worn out?😁

I would certainly be up for a copy Piet......signed of course  (bigthumb) (Lavflag)

Thank you Red and Clem for your added input and information which is much appreciated and notes taken on board, a decision has been made to go with the Duplex chain as the replacement.

Can anyone recommend the best place to get replacement clutch drive rubbers from?......and reasonably quickly if needed!

Thanks Guys

I can supply the clutch rubbers.  Whereabouts are you?  Post to UK(?) usually takes 2-3 days.

I ain't writing no books though...

I'm a bit flummoxed by assertions that uneven wear on 'used/used' teeth could cause issues on these drive trains. If I could detect even a sceric wear on a primary drive sprocket or clutch sprocket from a motor that's done probably 250,000km I'd say yes duplex to triplex would be problematic. But i can't, so if a primary chain breaks, I personally doubt VERY much that it's caused by swapping from one to the other.

Even minimal play in the clutch drum on the mainshaft is going to translate into altered load between inner and outer teeth, which by extension should mean there are trashed primaries in abundance out there.

Nicko..............."So Clem, less weight, less noise, more power...you still gonna wait until your triplex collection is worn out?😁"

I have a monster power boosting kit in stock, come and see it! and its all Laverda triple related.........

no more triplex spares left in stock Nicko, so when the time comes the decision will be made, was going to buy in massive stocks of timing, final and primary chains from Andy before he retired, but didn't get round to  it, only one timing chain on the shelf and a rear that was a raffle prize (very kindly donated by Andy) at Baskerville hall 2017.

I put it in this thread because I think it fits instead of opening a new one...

I have finally received the crank locking tool, jesus nut was effortless, now i am tightening the flywheel nut... i thought about this way to lock the crank... but when I started to apply Nm... i thought I better ask if it is the good way to go, or i would damage the crank?

Miguel.

The reverse thread nut on the right hand end of the crank only holds the starter clutch onto it's taper and does not require a lot of torque like the jesus nut on the left hand side that holds the drive sprocket in place. I just give my 10" socket bar a few whacks with my nylon hammer to tighten or loosen it, it is a shallow nut not meant for high torque load.

Ok great! So I will do! I read somewhere it needed also 10kg as the jesus nut... probably my mistake.
Thanks!
