Any modern day chain tensioner has a spring that works the other way, pushing up on the chain. Think of a drive chain on a dirt bike.
What's the point of having a spring pushing down on an adjusting bolt? Agree to stop the tensioner chattering up and down on the bolt, but if the slack was taken up by a heavy enough spring, it wouldn't chatter anyway. Of course, that mean you'd need another one at the top of the chain for throttle off periods. And after saying all that .............. it wasn't a bad design after all. :
There's two minutes of my life I'll never get back
