Fitting a set of kevlar clutch plates.
It's been a while since I visited that department.
Was thinking the clutch could be removed without having to remove the Jesus nut by removing the clutch cushion rubbers but the iwis twin chain chain is not allowing it.
I'm 99% sure I assembled it that way as I don't remember ever removing the Jesus's nut when last assembled, 2013 probably.
Am I missing something here?
 
Rob did you buy those kevlar plates recently, I was talking to Red at Eastern Creek and he was saying the place he was getting them from as an exchange couldn't do it anymore. That would be a great shame as they perform brilliantly.

Here's a question, is it normal practice to soak plates in oil before fitting?
Too late now as they're on. Just got to fuck about with alignment to fit the clutch drum. Is there an advantage to milling some holes in the clutch drum? I have a mill!!!

From my recent experience, I would say yes, soak the plates in oil. Could be clutch material dependent though.
Had I the expertise, I'd mill/drill some holes in the clutch drum.

Red drill my hub in its first trip north, I think Phil Todd has a drill pattern here years ago. Eades soaked mine, it didn't make much difference as those Serflex plates took ages to bed in. So horrible an action compared to Reds Kevlar ones. They work so well right from the get-go.
 
With the clutch in I squirted oil between the plates. Not having a pattern for holes I'll pass on the drilling of drum.
Next time.
Just struggling trying to get the sprocket back onto the drum. May have to resort to removing the jesus nut.
 
I had a vague recollection that I drilled holes in my clutch drum, so I hunted through some photos and found these.
I also gave the outside of the clutch drum a light skim on the lathe to true it up because it was un-machined (straight out of the casting die) and about half a millimeter off centre, making the outer wall a bit thicker on one side than the other. I only took the bare minimum off to balance it. You can still see a patch of the original cast surface.

I just marked them at 30° intervals on the lathe, centre punched them and drilled them on a shitty old drill press. The purpose of the holes is to allow oil to circulate through the clutch pack. I don't really know whether they actually achieve anything, but I figured they wouldn't do any harm.

Yes I am having trouble having the friction plates Kevlar plated for ages now, there is a shortage of suitable material probably because majority of Kevlar material is off to Ukraine, bless them and good luck if that is the case, they need it more than the Laverda world does

I do soak my Kevlar plates in oil before installing, no reason why, just seems right

As to the drillings of the clutch basket, etc,
Laverda clutch is designed to be wet, but in reality because of the design it is very difficult for the oil to actually get in there in the first place when you look at it
So yes I do drill clutch components, just the clutch basket on normal street engines but on tough street engines and race engines I drill the shit out of everything
 
Thanks Rob for the drilling link. I gave up trying to get the sprocket back on the drum yesterday and called it a day being friday and beer o'clock.
So today I may as well pull the drum back off and drill holes. It's times like these I wish I had a rotary table for the mill.
Not keen to pull the clutch plates off again to soak, call me lazy. I'll just squirt oil between them with the clutch depressed.
I guess it doesn't matter what size holes to drill.
The pneumatic torque wrench I have has 4 settings for the torque. Max being 250flbs minimum 125flbs.
What is the actual torque for that nut?
