Problem with SH Shindengen regulators

The Voxan club in France says that they have many problems with SH series Shindengen regulators, overheating and even caughting fire. Apparently they have to replace all the SH regulators by the FH series.
As this is the same type of regulator that most of us are using on our bikes with aftermarket ignitions, do any of you ever had similar problem? I never had any problem myself (SH530)...

A case of incorrect connector choice on the part of Voxan?

Sounds a lot like the R/R issues the Zane Laverdas have, first the connector to the R/R melts, then the wiring... too much resistance at that point.  If there were flammable components close by, reckon the things would have gone up in flames too.  Perhaps not the worst thing imaginable. :D

(Oooh, you're so unkind!  :D.  You know I call my Zan? Formula "Piet"? :P  :o)

Hi J-L,

Is it possible that Voxan put the R/Rs where they don't get enough breeze to cool them?

Just a thought  ...

Hi Craig, maybe... It is very stange as all Voxan owners seem to have the problem while many of us are using these SH regulators without trouble.

If the Zane bikes were horses, the most humane action would be to shoot them... reckon I'd better go outside and shoot myself then. :D

It is reassuring to see that you do in fact have mercy in your heart for the Zane bikes Piet!
Seems that Siindengen cover quite a range of applications

I've found Shindengen RRs to be perfectly reliable in the applications where I've used them, which is mostly on Laverdas that have a fairly moderate alternator output.

If RR failures are regularly showing up on a particular model of bike, then a logical conclusion would be that it's something to do with the bike, not the RR.
Either the RR is under-rated for the alternator output current that's going through it, it's not getting enough cooling air, or both. Could also be under-rated connectors as Piet said.

I had my Mirage out for a last blast before I put her away for the winter.  It looks like the Shindengen VR has gone south on me.  Can't say I'm surprised, as its been in there a good 6-8 years and it was used when installed.  Okay, what should I replace it with?  Another (new this time) Shindengen SH model?  Or, has that been superceded by something else?  What will reliably keep those volts in line and not cost an arm and a leg?

A Mosfet R/R (Shindengen FH type) will run cooler than a conventional shunt R/R (Shindengen SH type), and is slightly more efficient.  BUT the current flowing from the alternator through the R/R will be the same, so condition and rating of the wiring connectors is paramount.

I think Piet's on the money with his comment
A case of incorrect connector choice

I?ve got a Shindengen Reg Rec on my bike - and it?s been fine for the last 20 years.
My bike is a Zane Laverda.  Not needed to shoot it yet...
YMMV
Ian
(The connector did melt once, though 🙂, but as noted above that?s a function of the wiring and connectors, nor the Reg Rec per se)

Hi Lawrence

see  https://www.ebay.com/itm/SHINDENGEN-MOSFET-FH020AA-REGULATOR-RECTIFIER-KIT-NEW-GENUINE-SHINDENGEN/380704480069?hash=item58a3c15b45:g:iW8AAMXQMmJROKgr

I have purchased three of them from this seller, easy to fit and they work very well. Would be perfect for your 1200 TS, I have one fitted on my 1200 TS.

Seller decent to deal with as well, and he has sold a ton of them.
