well after a couple of weeks sorting out previous owners bodges ive managed to get the bike running, crank thread reclaimed new nut, second hand charge coil on and charging new Reg rec carbs off and cleaned new gaskets and seals, needle valves and seats ,Witt dmc mk1 system on and wired in,new insulation on ignition pickups ( thanks for the info red) also really couldn’t get ignition timing right until I found that the previous idiot had put the ignition rotor on the wrong way around ,changed it and the bike burst into life , just won’t idle now unless you put a little choke on ,suspect blocked idle circuit on centre carb? so all off again . does anyone know if there are timing marks on these motors as standard? Next it’s wheels and brakes and then ride it. also the collector box has rotted out and was wondering if the kit that Malcom cox does with the bigger diameter down pipes and collector is worth going for or armours do a stainless standard set ,thoughts please ,and once again thank you all for advice and information, really helpfull advice

I've had bad experience with armours with welds letting go very quickly and no answers to my mails.
Malcolm Coxs exhaust is high quality. Mine needed a bit of adjusting on the collector inner diameter.

I had an Armours set on my Mirage when I brought it over from the UK: had it on for 4-5 years with no issues (no cracks or other misbehaviour). Was very happy with them though wanted a set from Malcolm anyway. It's possible their quality control has deteriorated over the years though, as I say, mine were fine and ready to be refitted should the need arise..

Please show us your thread repair on the crank, or tell us what you did and how you achieved it

"insulation on ignition pickups ( thanks for the info red) "
tell us more about that please do, what was your process?

"previous idiot had put the ignition rotor on the wrong way around"
how is that possible? tell us more on that front as well, please.

"also really couldn’t get ignition timing right"
"does anyone know if there are timing marks on these motors as standard?."
how are you able to tell if the timing is not right when you appear to not know where the factory marks are?
(they are on the generator rotor) "PM" is TDC and there is a single strike mark on the inner cover, roughly above the centre line of the rotor, tick over RPM should be TDC, max advance should be 32 degrees)
CLEM

check on all ignition boxes, don't rely on one box advancing and assume the others do that as well..

Hi clem ,the thread repair I managed to uncover another 8mm of thread by machining the face of the flywheel back( see photos) and using a new nut with some Wurth thread lock ,the pick up coils ,both had perished there insulation so striped it right back and new heat shrink and Sikaflex to insulate wires entering pickups, the ignition rotor can be fitted 2 ways and there is a dimple on crank that locates the rotor it had been fitted back to front so the 2 lobes were at the 11oclock position instead of the 1 o clock position (hope that makes sense) the timing marks that look correct don’t look like factory marks and I thought that a previous owner might have put them on and only one mark on the case face and a tiny symbol on the flywheel also no full advance mark ? The stator had a small set of chisel marks and set it up on those ,hopefully will strobe it at the weekend when I can borrow a friends mine has broken,as to checking all boxes it only has 1 the dmc Witt mk1 ,hope this clears things up for you clem will post photos if I can9F27F914-C1D0-4DB1-9060-4DA27A5FF6C9.jpeg26B55389-2915-40C2-86D5-F3136D8AB871.jpegA6DD4105-893E-4A56-9E36-F4F6E81585A0.jpegF29B641B-6226-4877-8020-8C65CA01EC32.jpeg34DDE152-E6D1-4A3E-A52D-337F2E9C7BBA.jpeg915DCF10-3BFC-4C4B-9D83-BF3D149B4B6A.jpegF1694E1A-D7B9-4B1B-BDB7-F3672ACD44F7.jpeg9F27F914-C1D0-4DB1-9060-4DA27A5FF6C9.jpeg26B55389-2915-40C2-86D5-F3136D8AB871.jpegA6DD4105-893E-4A56-9E36-F4F6E81585A0.jpegF29B641B-6226-4877-8020-8C65CA01EC32.jpeg34DDE152-E6D1-4A3E-A52D-337F2E9C7BBA.jpeg915DCF10-3BFC-4C4B-9D83-BF3D149B4B6A.jpegF1694E1A-D7B9-4B1B-BDB7-F3672ACD44F7.jpeg293E12EA-4A50-477F-B43C-374305A0C66E.jpeg9BC0A7D1-5BE1-4D67-842C-472CCA737141.jpeg7CECEF0C-9DD6-4FB0-9E0D-B0C4BF128BAD.jpeg

If you look on the stator you can see some marks home made i think, and the rotor can be inverted witch throws the timing wildly out and would not start changed it around the other way and it started straight away49DBA4BA-A0F6-48C0-A8EE-E165A3D27992.jpeg

Thanks paul I’m going to go for Malcoms kit ,nothing but good reviews for his kit
