Quick action throttle

I'm sure it's been coverd on here before but having got used to using quick action throtles on my other bikes I'm rather fed up with having to keep winding the standard (Suzuki) throtle several times to get it open.

Does anyone know if you can get an insert to fit into the standard throtle housing to quicken the action to say 1/5th turn?

Looking around the easy way is to get a start/stop type assy' then a seperate Q/A throttle assy but this looks a little messy compared to the original.

Your coments would be appreciated.

A QA throttle will make an already heavy pull throttle unbearably heavy.
Some folk remove the accelerator pump ramp thingy to lighten throttle feel, apparently without detriment to carb action. There have been several heated debates on this previously.
If you fit a set of different carbs the throttle pull is lighter, especially with CV carbs, but even a set of Mikuni fkat slides is much lighter pull.

Motion Pro makes a selection of throttle drum pulleys for their modular MX Revolver throttle system, just replace the pulley for one with a larger diameter (5mm increments) or even use a "cam" profile pulley for faster action at wider throttle openings. Look at http://www.motionpro.com/motorcycle/tools/category/revolver_performance_cam_reels/. Will these things fit inside a Laverda/NipponDenso throttle housing? Dunno, but probably not. And even if they did, you're still faced with the problem of bonding the Motion Pro pulley to a (turned down) NipponDenso throttle tube. I've seen something like this done with Delrin bicycle bar-end gear shifters, pieces laser welded together. Still came apart occasionally, and where do find somebody to laser weld it anyway?
Somebody on an earlier thread on this topic mentioned that there was once a business that used to modify standard throttles to accept larger diameter cable pulleys, but those days seem to be well and truly over.
Frankly, your idea of a separate throttle and kill switch housing is probably the safest, although don't forget you also need a starter button. Motion Pro offers the adjustable Revolver throttle (http://www.motionpro.com/motorcycle/search/by_motorcycle/revolver_throttle_kits) and the external kill switch (http://www.motionpro.com/motorcycle/partno/11-0057/), still no starter button though. You dont have to use their solutions, a low end Motion Pro (http://www.motionpro.com/motorcycle/partno/01-0053/) or Magura QA throttle will work with any kill switch/starter, you can even leave the original ND kill/starter housing on the bars with a third party QA throttle.
And as Grant says, use Mikunis, or eat lots of spinach.

+1 for Mikunis  :D  Oooh, luvverly light action on those (push pull throttle)  I did make a sort of quick action cam pulley by filing a KMX one to shape, but it really didn't make too much difference, espoecially as the standard job is so stupidly heavy.

We bought one from Giovanna(cant spell it) on ebay now and again he puts them to bid we got ours for 35 pounds normally he sells for 78 pounds well worth it and no heavier than standard

As Grant says, it was covered on here a while ago, try a search.
There is no problem cutting the springs down a bit when fitting a QA throttle, unless your carb bodies are stuffed and the slides need strong springs to shut. I have a Magura on my SF, with the clamp bit fitted inside the slightly carved out original switchblock, keeping the original switches. Have seen the same on triples. It is a fantastic modification, the bike actually responds to the throttle.

I saw this picture on the forum Crazy Moto

There is no address of the manufacturer, but it can provide ideas

I ran one of these....

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-TOMMASELLI-QUICK-ACTION-THROTTLE-made-Italy-/120733474095?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item1c1c469d2f#ht_7404wt_1140

On a Mirage for many, many years and it was pretty much perfect.

You'll also want to buy another right hand side handlebar switch unit (if you're running the GS type switches).

For example [1]...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GS750-GT750-RIGHT-SWITCH-THROTTLE-CABLES-/270779175597?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item3f0bb252ad#ht_898wt_906

If you then cut away the switch on the throttle side, you can insert the throttle mounting screws "into" the switch, which makes for a pretty neat result.

Cheaper than a set of Mikunis :-)

[1] if the seller only knew he was selling a genuine JOTA throttle assembly...............

Looks like a twin cable throttle (push/pull) to me.

Actually, since this has 2 cables, it couldn't be a "genuine JOTA" throttle. But this is the one to buy if you're using Mikunis, identical to original but with push/pull cables.
Then you could still lash out on a set of "genuine NOS Laverda grips" for only a couple of hundred dollars/pounds/rubles, so you could know you're still authentic.
Actually, I didn't even know early GSs used a push/pull throttle. I think this is actually from an early GT... a "genuine GT throttle". ;)

Here's the one I found for Drmsby after he complained about the long throttle pull after he first rode the SFC which already had a 50mm quick-pull tomaselli twistgrip on it.  I asked him, "how quick do you want it?  You know it gets heavier the quicker it is?" He replied he didn't care how heavy it was, he just wanted the f*$*ing throttle open!
My rider gets exactly what he asks for (if possible), so this is what I found - as far as I know the quickest throttle being made today, with a whopping 80mm barrell. This sucker opens a pair of 40mm Dells in about 45 degrees.  I had to reduce the steering lock to clear the tank....
Requires very careful setup of the cables etc, simple physics means it will always be x% heavier than a shorter unit, given similar setup. The quicker you go, the less tolerance there is for any poor maintenance.  Stock units are still usable with clapped out cables and no lube, but feel like they've gained 20hp with a bit of loving.  Probaby not the go for a road bike.
Cheers

hi
yes all early gs750 suzukis used twin cables.so you can blank the other hole if using standard carbs.the lower half of a sp370 switch will fit as it only has one cable and as its nippondenso will match up perfectly

Grants right ditched mine and went back to standard suzi no more unbearable hand cramp.

My Brettoni has a Tomaselli on it and the ribs on the grip have twisted like a cork screw yet it doesn't seem loose. It is pretty heavy operation wise so must just slowly twist it on the inner .

Quick is a relative term..I have a Magura quick action on my 79 Jota..dog slow compared to the KTM Duke 690 R set up..jeez one twitch down a pothole on that and your heading skyward!
Don't find the Jota set-up heavy (but then I am ok with the cable clutch unless in city traffic gridlock)...even though Keith wacked the pump jets back in...though did change to lighter carb springs(not much different to standard really). Room on bar limited with standard swirtchgear, so used the cluster from a Firestorm very helpfully wired up to suit by Clem.
