We came back across the Alpine Way a few weeks back on Mon 7/4 in the cage, all 60 kph now as you note. We passed 2 HWPs, one just inside the 60 on the approach to Khancoban parked under a tree ready to pounce and another on the road just out of town. I figured we'd be OK from then on, and was surprised to find the new 60 zoning all the way to Dead Horse IIRC.
It was in some ways a better road before they sealed the last of it, early/mid 1980s IIRC. Scammels Spur was sealed and up the hill from Tom Groggin, but the rest was good gravel, and it kept the plebs away.
