Some of you might know Sabine Schmitz from her appearances in Top Gun like the 'Sabine Schmitz's Nurburgring Van CHALLENGE' for example:

Beside fun like the above she was a serious race driver. She was among the 24h Nurburgring (Green Hell) winner teams more than once.
Now she's lost her fight against cancer in the age of only 51.

I met her first time 1998 I think during the Vedool Long distance cup. She was 2 years younger than me and at that time roughly 28 or 29, not sure. She outperformed most of the men on the track by far in her class. But that wasn't what really fascinated me on her, it was more how positive and down to earth at the same time she was. She was a "buddy" type of person that you would without doubt have a full evening of laughs and simply a good time with. She really enjoyed making people (especially men) seasick in her car, racing a BMW M5 over the Nürburgring. She overtook a lot of people that thought they were fast easily and did that while she was talking as if she was cruising with 70 km/h over a normal country road on her way to a coffee with grandma. The only thing you recognized on that she is actually in racing mode was that her hair stood 90° to one side, then 90° to the other side...

I would have loved to have a beer or two with her and simply enjoy some time. unfortunately, I was to shy to even talk to her when I met her back in 1998 (she was already famous to me). Not that it would have made a difference for her, but it's a chance I missed that will never come back.

Carpe Diem. And all the best for you, Sabine, and my heartfelt condolences to the family. What a loss...

Knew about her way before top gear too, was fascinated by her driving and her appearance. Had one opportunity to actually chat with her when we met at the Ring (not on it, she was waaaay to fast there) and what a friendly funny person. Made me want to go back and try to get her to go out with me for quite a while after that. (A bit like you Lothar, we would have fought over her ;)). Never did, but who knows...
So really shocked today when I heard she's no longer with us.

Rest in peace Sabine, Queen of the Ring.

51 and didn't look a day over 35.
She has been privately battling the big C for five years and it was her wish that no one knew of her predicament, that just about sums her up, but better than that, she showed Clarkson alright, oh yes, big time,s orry Jeremy but she nailed it and you trailed it, a vey sad loss for the planet.

So Jeremy Clarkson was driving a Jaguar S-Type and Sabine a Ford Transit Van around the Nürburgring and she very nearly beat his lap time.
I didn't realise that afterwards she took his Jaguar for a lap and beat his time by 47 seconds !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a driver and what a lady!
