Rear Brake Light Switch

Does anyone have or know where to get a replacement 3c rear brake light switch in Sydney, mine has just died. It's as rusty as hell, I don't want to have to reengineer a switch. I need something that bolts into the slotted standard 3c mount nice and easy and connects to the spring and wiring that's there..

Just about unobtanium by now Vince. They do pop up occasionally for really stupid money. Rig something up with a generic switch, might save you a long wait/search. I use the same as Paul has fitted to his Moto Giro Gilera.

Me too, on my 3C mounted on an unobtrusive piece of steel plate where the original switch was. Works fine.

This is the original on my sf2, got a couple of Kawasaki ones on their way to sir Vincealot

When someone suffers a brain injury, the brain makes new connections so another part of the brain will take over the job that the damaged part did.

You could do the same thing with your bike. Rig up a string and pulley system to pull the front brake on a bit when you operate the rear brake pedal. Not only will it give you linked brakes, but the front brake light switch will take over the job of the rear switch. :)

OK, maybe not such a brilliant idea. Perhaps I have brain damage.

On a more sensible note ... These switches with the long tail on the spring are useful. Can be made to fit pretty much any mechanical brake. I wouldn't call it re-engineering, but you'll need to spend 10 minutes making up a bracket to fit it to your 3C.

I have ordered one from Melbourne but it looks like it won't arrive before this weekend's ride so I might have to bodge one of Marty's ones to fit, easy enough but I don't want to keep attaching and redoing wiring as it gets shorter every time. Hopefully, the new rubber cover allowed another 40 years of use

Blimey, if it was my bike, I wouldn't bother fitting a temporary switch just for one weekend. How often do you use the rear brake on its own? I presume the front brake light switch still works so it's not as if you'll have traffic running up your arse every time you brake.

Got the same comment from Marty, BUT typically there is an issue. I have a far from standard front brake setup, remote Radial master 4 spots and I thought that was the explanation as to why it takes so much pull on the lever to engage the brake light when the front is tugged. When the light comes on I would be well over the bars with a fully locked front brake and there is no adjustably to activate the light. But according to Marty and from his experience, these hydro brake switches can gum up after 40 years making activation harder and slower. Bear with me with the next bit, as Laverdas have a reasonably long wheelbase if I use both brakes I get way less front dive, using both brakes I feel the bike sink in a more controlled horizontal way allowing more control. Short wheelbase more modern bikes have way more front bias when braking hard and making braking on the rear a waste of input and potentially dangerous So long term I need to look at replacing the hydro front brake light switch so it activates as soon as I touch the front brake lever a tiny bit and not like now with 4 fingers and the liver we past brake engagement, BUT I always relided on the rear brake light being on a hair-trigger, especially on the coming LONG WEEKEND ride in what looks like rain and poor visibility on a very well travelled major route out of Sydney on a tight and twisty mountain road with lots of stupid once a year city driver about.

My Brembo radial m/cyl that came gratis with my R1 clipons has a micro-switch. The lever holds it 'off' (no elec contact) and as soon as you use the lever it makes contact and the light operates. Would be easy to rig one up to your setup Vince. i bought one to fit to the rear but it was too complicated to fit into my very narrow space down there. Bought it online for about $30 I think.

Fair enough Vince. You obviously know what you're doing. I reckon it would be a good idea to get that front brake switch sorted though. I think I have a couple of spare hydraulic switches lying around. I can check if you like.

I did, I hit all bases when on the search for bits. Looks like the Melbourne Branch is on holidays. Nothing dispatched yet
