rear drum brake cooling device

Its a very difficult thing deciding exactly what is right for a bike I know little about other than theories.
I am aiming for a very serious amount of power, and power to weight.
Aiming to have it race ready and with rider at 200kg all in.
That is a very light bike! running a 130 rear and 90 front so not a massive amount of tyre but with a light bike the theory is possible but I think I may / will struggle if the power I want is achieved.
Drums all round, not worried about grabbing as we work all day with drums and generally grabbing can be dealt with by setting up well.
Due to the light weight of the bike and the fact that whatever I do the rider will be at least 1/3 of the weight of the all up weight, this means the CofG will be relatively high,
Therefore maybe a high probability of large weight transfer etc.
At the moment I calculate a 55/45 weight bias forward but again only theory.
Therefore I must account for allowing the rider the choice of using the rear brake as much as he/she would like, so think it would be silly to fit a smaller rear drum to save weight but sacrifice possible braking.
Will weigh the front and rear wheel assemblies this weekend and see the difference in drum weight as an indication of the weight gain I would see by using the matching yamaha rear drum over the Laverda.

I raced my fairly stock SF1 with one up front. Had it set up with (Ferodo?) green linings by racing fells who knew their stuff. Had loads of power and great feel and never faded on the 'long' track (Wanneroo Raceway Perth) but certainly faded on a country town street course (Bunbury), nearly all right hand 90 deg housing estate type corners. On the road it eventually became jerky due to the cast drum coming away from the alloy in places and creating hot spots then warping slightly. Bought a brand new one and that lasted several years before the same thing happened.

Not planning to race it a massive amount anyway, simply to sort it and prove it and that will do. Will have to see how well the engine stays together :ROFLMAO:

Weight yes, but rider skill and corner speed.
Mostly corner speed. The more you brake on a bike with little power, the more important it is.

In that Danilo Petrucci article , he mentions he uses the rear brake to minimise wheelies at the start of the race .......... Doesn`t Ducati employ a shapeshifter to do the same thing ? And maybe they could utilise the shapeshifter to stabilise the bike on the approach to a corner instead of using the rear brake .... ? ........ Probably complete rubbish , but just thinking ............
 
Rolling backwards, on an incline, I want both feet available, so would always go with the front brake for retardation.
Depends how steep the hill is. I've been in the situation where the hill was so steep that there wasn't enough weight on the front wheel to give the tyre sufficient grip to hold the bike. Rear brake was the only option. At least it was a disk that worked OK backwards. Good thing it had a sidecar so I didn't need to put any feet on the ground. :)
 
Grimeca rear off a 650 Benelli on this. Guy I built it for gave several options, this was the lightest.

I recall a scary occasion when stopped at the front of the line at a traffic light on a wet steep uphill with full load of passenger and touring gear where the relatively unloaded front disc braked wheel on the SF2 was locked but sliding backwards and, pushing hard on the rear brake pedal while dancing with the right foot trying to maintain balance in a moment of near panic that I was about to run into the car behind, that the only thing that came to mind was more throttle and slip the clutch to get more brake effect from the back wheel - I never told my passenger in case she decided never to ride with me again! TLS rear is great going forwards but pathetic rolling backwards. Thank goodness that the clutch in its oil bath can take some pretty serious abuse. Reminds me of more recent times when the down shift on my 750GTL took into its mind to work only when it felt the time was right and I did a lot of standing starts in traffic in fourth and fifth gears - the marvels of that wonderfully flexible motor and clutch.
