Rear Shocking

I was making some inquiries about rear shocks, specifically, springs and I got an interesting comment from one of the suppliers. I was asking if you used dual-rate springs and he said no, some manufacturers have to use heavy rate dual springs as their shocks don't have a compression damping circuit. They use there heavy second dual-rate spring as damping and slow it down with the rebound oil damping. That shocked me, sorry, my Icons have dual-rate springs and the damping adjuster only controls the rebound. So does anyone know if they do have both compression and rebound oil circuits?

Hello vince,
The Ikon/Koni shock don't have adjustment for compression damping and the amount of compression damping inherent in the design is minimal. Even so there are some racers who feel that less than minimal is preferable but other racers feel that this makes them lose the feel.
On the road though sometimes less is best and keep it simple with 4 rebound damping adjustments and simple preload adjustment. Ideal for quick change if you have varying loads like the occasional pillion passenger.
The Ikon 7610  https://damclassicracing.com.au/50201070-shock-absorber-set-3c-ikon7610-1397/
The Ikon 7614 has gas pressure to stop oil foaming, this makes the shock more consistant when the going gets rough.https://damclassicracing.com.au/50201070-1-shock-absorber-set-3c-ikon-7614-1397blk-spring/ The preload is a screw thread type.

As the cost(price) of design goes up there is more variation. The data logging of WSBK and MotoGP is used by some manufacturers to design a percentage of compression damping to increase with rebound damping increase.
The Nitron R1 uses this data for their algorithm https://damclassicracing.com.au/50201070-3-shock-absorber-set-3c-nitron-r1/
There is more info related to Laverda in the description.
The piggyback type shocks have more adjustments and also use this type of data. https://damclassicracing.com.au/50201070-4-shock-absorber-set-3c-jota-nitron-r3/

Be aware that spring and shock diameter are often too big to fit on Laverda without having to cut the chain guard. Along with the short swingarm leverage and steering geometry of Laverda this one one of the considerations we had when requesting Nitron to exclusively design each of the shock absorbers we order specifically for the 500, 750 1000/1200 models.
