Chris, I fitted a brand new genuine VW reg and burnt out my gennie in about the first 2km! THE SF requires the diode thing (yeah, my strong point - lectrizicals 8) ) and they cost about 4 times as much as th VW one that looks ... kinda about almost identical.
Had the gennie rewound and sorted it but since then I've fitted a Denso alternator from a GPX1000 or similar, run off a Gates belt - works a treat and saves kilos plus smaller battery - you're the modifying kinda - go for it!
I'll post some pics when I spot my new front end pics.
