Repairing Executive hand guards....again

Yeah, its pretty much a normal thing with these hand guards and I'm getting tired of it.

Fixing the mounting tab at the top, where the mirror mounts. Bayflex is hard to repair, doesn't take to welding and the mating surface is so small here that glues don't work well. My last fix used JB Weld and it lasted a while but now I'm doing it again and looking for something a bit stronger. My question then is, has anyone tried reinforcing these with some fiberglass and resin? I'm wonder if the resin will bond properly with the bayflex. If not fiber glass then how bout CF resins?

Hi Ed, CF resins are basic epoxy, nothing special. I've been using West System for my carbon projects and from my limited research it's probably the resin of choice.
As for it sticking to Bayflex, you can only try. I imagine that JB wels is an epoxy based product, if that stuck so should epoxy then.
Not familar with the hand guards so have no idea of the attaching details. Can the mounting be re-engineered for a permanant fix?

Hopefully with one of the resins you get it fixed. I recently used a 2 part system normally used for the plastic bumpers on cars, on Suzuki plastic. Seems to be holding up. Alternatively, a few years ago Wolfgang had the Executive hand guard extensions in fiberglass avaialble. With some sanding to get the curve right I fitted these to my Corsa and they have held up fine.

Not sure Wolfgang has those fiberglass extensions any more. I remember he told me once himself that they didn't fit very well. Do you have any pictures of one of them, installed, that you can post up?

Probably teaching you to suck eggs but after I did lots of bogging on both my Pantah and SFC lookalike seat I then hear they make a flexable bog,or at least more flexable than the generic car 2 pack bog I used.
There is a Sigaflex adhesive I used to fix a car panel that the mounts had broken off, might be worth a look, kinda expensive at $60 for a silicon type tube. Its designed to fix body kits to cars.

Guys,

Tried welding bayflex and achieved preety good results with ABS sticks.
Take the guards to a local body shop that does car bumpers.  They should be able to weld it at a resonable price.
Epoxy resin will stick to the bayflex to a degree, but it would not stick perfectly.
Will try to make some photos tomorrow.

Guys

I've got a brand new set of original unpainted Bayflex hand guards in the loft... waiting for the proverbial rainy day!

I'd be happy to send them over to Boba to use as a pattern if that's an option?

Here is  photo of the welds on the RGS hand guards. Yellow is the basic colour of the bayflex and black is the welds.
Once resprayed these hand guards will look as good as new.

I have a pair of those handguards if someone wants to pay the postage. There may be a scratch on them as the fucking garage possum keeps knocking them off the cupboard. I'll never use them as it just doesn't get cold enough here hahaha suckers. I can stick the possum in the post if you want that too.

They are RGS red.

I used to work with a Kiwi bloke who had a plastic blow-up sheep called Baaaarbra. It had stick on fuzzy patches on the sides so the velcro gloves would grip. He wasn't happy though. He said it kept going down on him.

Did some fiber-glassing today. I'll trim and sand tomorrow, bolt it all back together, and see how it holds.
