Replacement ignition system for a 500

... the only one I know is the Sachse electronic ignition:

Ciao, Gert

I have used the sacshe complete system without problem, then I used the Ignitech box with the sacshe pick ups. This is on my race bike. Both have been faultless, the reason I change to Ignitech was to have a programmable system, trying to get every bit of power I could. I destroyed my first engine build after a bastardised combination of Boyer bits and peices caused massive heat build up, eventually losing the heads off two exhaust valves

If you want bullit proof reliability and simplicity the Sacshe unit is excellent, very simple to fit, my 500 even ticked over - for a while anyway  follow this youtube link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2USpuHcA6Tw

I also run Dynatek coils which again, have proved faultless

Ignitech are in in Chec' Sacshe in Germany, I have had help from both although occasionally there are language problems, make sure you get right system from Ignitech from memory you need to tell them what pickups you are using, the Sachse pick ups are Hall effect which they need to know, you can buy the pick ups with backing plate alone, you dont have to buy a full system

Not sure if  Sachse have changed it yet, but Red found that if the grub screws holding the rotor to the crank vibrated loose they would trash the ignition, his simple solution was to move the position of the grub screws onto the body of teh rotor - away from the edge. I have the original system but ALWAYS use the recommended loctite product on the grub screws

Dont forget these little twins really know how to vibrate so if it says Loctite - use it

Thanks Fitz, lots of good information in that post.

Currently the bike has no ignition components. I need a complete ignition system, pick ups, ecu, coils etc.

What a sound!! perfect idle! which exhaust do you have? any engine modifications? is a 500s or standard?

Hi, my engine has every possible modification, Carrillo rods, Ross pistons, S1 cams, Atlas valves in modified valve seats, barrel base machined to bump compression, I can adjust the valve timing using slotted cam wheels the only thing I have never found is a close ratio gearbox but at my skill level, I doubt the importance of that. The exhaust is a full factory Barcelona system (thanks Phil)

I have since modified it again to try and appease the noise police at race meetings and track days, it was regularly hitting 102dB at around 5500rpm but it varies a lot depending where you do the test. If you test on a grass surface like we do at Cadwell Park i measures around 98 < 100dB at Anglesey on concrete with a queue of 30 bikes behind you all revving their engines, it will hit 104dB

I had another system manufactured using those but ugly cans that all classic bikes are forced to use, the main pipes are much bigger than the Barca system but after on meeting, the muntings had broken on one side, like I say, they really know how to vibrate these little twins

Since that video I fitted Keihin Roundslide CR carbs on modified inlet stubs. This has been a pain in the arse to be honest, it will not tick over like it did with the Dels fitted and teh reason I went to Ignitech was to try and dial out poor pick up from small throttle openings, once it gets onto half open or full throttle it is seriously quick for a little bike

I also have fully adjustable (compression / rebound) suspension and custom springs set up by a proper suspension firm, Davies rear shocks, fork brace (thanks Red) modified yokes and box section swing arm

It's a shame I am not as quick as the bike has potential to be but there is always a new season and more to learn
