Replacing chain and sprockets

I am replacing my chain and both sprockets on my 1981 Jota, all was going smoothly until I came to replace the front sprocket, getting the locking washer in place is proving impossible, I do not want to mangle it by hammering it into place, has anyone any technique for getting it in place so that I can insert the 2 holding screws.

I attach a picture of the washer in question.

I assume you have the sprocket on as far as it can go? I'd polish up the locating washer (i.e. shine off the old crud) and ensure the groove on the shaft is clean and that the locating washer can turn within it..

And that the sprocket is all the way home on the shaft so that you have full use of the slots for the locking washer. No harm in tapping (not bashing) it a bit into place, a socket under a sprocket tooth holds it in place.

AndyW, having the scalloped side face in may be the issue, I had it the other way, which was the way the removed one was fitted. I'll give it a try this evening.

Thanks.

If you warm up the new sprocket it will be easier to install solidly on the shaft with very gentle taps with a hammer. You will be able to index that lock washer in more easily too, with the sprocket fully seated.

I suggest wrapping the sprocket in aluminum foil and set the oven to 350*F. Let cook for 30 minutes then using the wife's favorite hot mitts, when she is not looking..take the sprocket out of the oven and unwrap. It should go into place with little effort on the shaft.

Thanks for all the great advice, the sprocket is on now (and easily) with the new chain nicely aligned.

Great site with expert advice, do know what I would do without it.
