Rev counter drive thread (triple) question

Thanks. Yes, I've seen the thing before.
The thing is my discussion partner states
that it's thread is conical, with a slightly
thicker diameter at the base than at
the end.

That's because the cable wasn't tightened properly over a lengthy period.

Very often, the circlip for the drive spade is omitted, the cable end has play and will loosen the nut over time.  The wobbly nut slowly but surely wears away the thread of the spigot.

The circlip is actually held stationary by the cable when the nut is tightened, locating the drive spade at a constant height.  Another little detail that is often misunderstood and therefore neglected... ::)

New spigot and circlip, and all is well again.
