RGA Starter problem - (I think)

Lately after a while of starting ok (notwithstanding the amount of choke and throttle and time) it's been playing up a bit. Initially a light grinding / graunching noise during spin up. This has now turned into hideous crashing / banging / crunching noises, now culminating in a whizzing /spinning / scream that doesn't appear to be even turning the engine over. Consequently it won't start at all now. Last time I pushed it forward in gear (as if to move the engine on a bit) and it started again (albeit reluctantly) Now it's back to just spinning around with no apparent drive to the engine. Must be starter motor problems but thought I'd put it out there for advice before I strip down and fix/replace. PS not done this repair before so following my nose. Thanks for any advice/help.

Starter clutch. Best looked at as soon as you notice bad noises on starting.

This will tell you everything that you need to know about the problem and how to repair. As noted above, it is the sprag clutch, not the starter motor that is the likely culprit.

Sprag clutch. Don't try to bump start the bike and ride, the clutch might seize and spin the starter motor to destruction.
