RGS 1983 Heating Issues

I've just completed the restoration of my RGS. Thanks to Volki and Bjorne for supplying me with all the missing parts!! No work was done to the engine apart from changing the oil and plugs and cleaning the carburetors.
The motor runs quite smoothly once warmed up, but I've noticed that the outer left cylinder is running a lot hotter than the outer right hand side after running for a while. Any reason for this? The jet settings on all three carbs are the same and so are the spark plugs.

Hi Jannie,

check the float-levels. Are the carbs internals new? Have you checked valve clearance? Have you checked for leaks (intake and exhaust on that cylinder?

cheers

Lothar

As Lothar said, it is running too lean on that cylinder.
If you keep using it in that condition you run the risk of burning out a valve or worse.

Were the carbs ultrasonic cleaned and blown through with an air line?
Were new float valves fitted?
Float heights adjusted?
How many turns out for the mixture screws? Should be between 1.5 to 2 turns out if using the original 65 pilot jets.
Also check valve clearances as Lothar says too.

and check the Choke sliders close completely on all 3 cylinders and move equaly up if you engage the choke. sounds weird first hand, but I have seen people adjusting the carbs differently to compensate for choke-sliders not closing and making the other cylinders running to rich. This might cause the one that closes completely to run lean...

Hard to give any advice without knowing if this is heat generated at idle or general running? Are you feeling the cylinders with your hand? Surely carb sync would be pivotal if one cyl is running hotter then the others?

The difference in temperature between the outer cylinders are felt after running it in the garage for about five minutes. You can hardly touch the left barrel with your hand whereas the right barrel you can touch no problem.

As per previous advice, plus I'd also check the manifold rubbers as they can crack and cause you a lean mixture. Where are you on your mixture screws ?? even they are ? if set up correct should be circa 1 1/2 turns out from lightly seated.

Sounds like an electrical problem! Try new plug/s.

Seems there's a problem with the right cylinder if you can put your hand on it after 5 minutes of running in the workshop (with no cooling air flowing over it). If it was running normally it would be very hot to touch like the L side. I'd guess that it's only running on 2 cylinders. The little bit of heat you can feel on the R side is just the heat generated by compression of the gas mixture.

A quicker check would be to run the engine for 10 second, then feel the exhaust headers. They should be hot enough to burn your hand if you grab them, so only give them a quick touch with the tip of a finger. If the R side isn't running, it'll only be slightly warmer than cold.

As our thin friend said. Check for a spark on that cylinder.

Cam,

I like to keep things simple ;) You have perfectly elaborated upon the reasons for my diagnosis :)

Currently about 61 kags, I will try to eat/drink more. Some insulation for winter would be great, sigh does nae work for me

Ciao,
J
