"almost new" starter could be the result of a crap refurb, there is a lot of bad service abounding in almost every sector if life, take your money and do the least possible for it.
I am getting lots of this lately, I recently had to get a plumber to one of my rented properties, there was a water leak under a wash basin, he tightened the tap connector, and left, all was good, next he says that the taps are not compatible with the tap connectors and new taps are required.
point#1 he fitted the taps just over a year ago as one of them was drippin. So thats his call then ?
point #2. all threaded stem taps sold in the UK comply with BS1010, all taps connectors 15mm or 22mm supplied in the UK are compatible with BS1010 taps.
point #3. two months after he tightened the connectors, there is still no leak
point #4 he is unaware that pipes in all forms was my trade for 50 years, and I employed between 1 and 22 plumbers/pipefitters/welders as work loads raised and fell.
point #5 not everyone is gullible.
CLEM
