RGS engine rebuild

Been quite for a few days; all night bush fire and attending a fatal car crash tends to make you shut up for a while.
Started and warmed up the Yellow Peril the other day and used a long screwdriver as a stethoscope, the noise comes from the primary drive side and the rattling sound can be changed by adjusting the primary drive chain which indicates to me that it isn't big ends or mains. Will whip the cover off and check the Jesus Nut, cush drives and other bits and bobs. Don't want to split the cases and only as a last resort.

If you can go Andys duplex chain, not sure you can with only 2 teeth primary on an RGS.Great bit of kit. I once had 2 separate single primary chains and one was much looser than the other. Both bought at the same time when triplex chains couldn't be found.
I seem to have the most stupidly odd Laverda world fuck up record.

Duplex wont work on an RGS

Terry check the outrigger on the clutch hub support for looseness and also the bearing.

New single row chains might help if its chain noise....... l

They do if it's an early RGS.  Mine came with a triplex fitted, even had the 180 type engine breather valve!

I can supply either simplex or triplex primary chains.

I'd check the clutch hub fit on the mainshaft as well. Not much can be done about hub and drum wear except replacement.  Might be worthwhile to re-fit those "useless" anti-rattle springs. :D

Yes planning an invasion, apparently you have decent roads and red wine, what could possibly go wrong?

Roads are good but there isn't much red wine left in SA after my last invasion with my alcoholic wine nerd mates. Cleaned out the Barossa, Clare, Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale, and Langhorne Creek. Still some in Coonawarra I believe.

Good point hmm forgot about those early girls. cant remember what the break point was .but.
And I agree re the useless "anti rattle springs " always fit them back on myself as it goes and by the by have had a few comments about the quietness of my engines  :o

The Yellow Peril cam fitted with a triplex chain, now fitted with one of Andy's chains (via Red), can't remember if it's a duplex or two individual chains. Removed the anti-rattle springs years ago and there wasn't any discernible increase in noise. I'll take the primary drive cover off and have a look see.

Ok OK you win..... welcome back CAM. Sorry am only used to working on modern RGS's so maybe the break point was 83.
To be honest my brain wont take me back to the 80's when was working full time on the lumps.. I do remember we used to fit single rows into series 2 etc... also as that was the go back in the day as the theory was less drag than the old triplex Jobbies.

So I thought that the reason they went that way on RGS was for noise reduction to pass noise level tests.
Maybe it was something introduced into the 83 models... 1977, 2181 and 2622 all have two single rows with no centre teeth...

anyways sounds like an issue somewhere under the cover, rip it off, identify, rectify and refit the cover.. fill back up with some good oil and ride it and enjoy the RGS... with whatever primary chain set up they are still a great bike and the best tourer around.  :o :o

1977 just about ready for its venture to SA at Easter...

If you want to put a duplex primary chain on a later RGS that has no centre row of teeth on the sprockets, it's only a matter of changing the sprockets for the earlier type.

I have a spare set of triplex primary drive sprockets in good condition. I got them years ago with the intention of converting them to Morse (Hy-vo) type chain as an experiment. The idea being to machine them down to a suitable diameter to shrink/weld a set of Morse type sprockets onto the Laverda centres.  I doubt I'll ever get around to doing it so if anyone wants them I'm open to offers.
