RGS forks

Hi I thought I would take a look at my forks but this is what happened, I undid the left hand fork clamps and the bike sat ok on just the right hand fork, I then did up the left hand fork and undid the right hand clamps at which point the bike sank and the stanchion passed up through the top yolk, obviously I will change oil in both but why would that happen? Any ideas?

Presumably the fork cap was removed from the left hand stanchion to allow the yoke to sink down over the right hand stanchion? My instinct would be that there was stiction of the stanchion in the left hand clamp when the bolts were loosened.

It's best to lift the front of the bike slightly before servicing the forks, and only the top fork caps need to be removed to refill with new oil. Removing the front wheel will also help the process. For safety, I use straps on the handlebar ends affixed to an overhead garage beam. If you want to remove the forks completely, loosen the top fork caps first.
