RGS Head on 180 Block

Is it worthwhile to install an RGS head on a 180 barrel/block? From what I've read after researching this forum gas flow & thus output is improved but no dyno figures posted. Any tricks or tips? 3C cover fits on? 180 cams work in 120 saddles? Oil flow the same through studs? My '76 head has small cracks forming around spark plug bores so prob only a matter of time before a rebuild or replacement.

Absolutely no issues concerning a swap, everything fits as before. The power gain is small to negligable, dependant mostly on overall condition of the bottom end. It's the larger inlet valves that provide a small boost. Oil flow to the top end is determined by the exit holes in the cam bearings, these can be simply transferred from the previous head. As the 120s are not known for any top end oiling issues, using the 120° cam bearings is also possible.

Overall, the 120° heads are far stronger, they incorporate all casting up-grades that eventally flowed into the previous heads.

I cant answer the actual question, but do have a 180 Jota now sporting the head and barrels from the Slaters RGS show engine. Keith re cut the valve seats even though unused, to 3 angle, billet cam blocks, drilled cam wheels to facilitate timing settings, more recently the bores are out to 78mm, and Mikunis fitted...plus full crank rebuild with new Arrow rods. No idea as to power, but it is a delight, torque, power as much as I would want. Get one of Keiths new gaskets...does away with fiddly O rings. Good luck with yours.

Would that then be advisable to fit the larger RGS oil pump?

It would always be advisable to fit any larger pump if the bike is to be used hard. But not entirely necessary.

I guess the cam oil supply was restricted to increase flow to the crank bearings, rods, pistons. It should be remembered the surplus oil from the big ends is used to lube the cylinders and cool the pistons from below. The 120s invited to rev harder and longer, therefore they would require additional piston cooling.

I have SFC-Type heads on all my triples, no matter if 180° Jota or 120° 1000 SFC or 1200 3CL 180° Engine in the Motoplast (while on the engine of the Motoplast, the head has been modified to SFC specs; It's originally a 3CL head).

As Piet pointed out, without further modifications, there is only a minimal gain, not sure if measurable; still a great upgrade, if you can find one. If you look for more torque and top end power, there are a variety of options. But be careful not to open a can of worms here, because a) it is adictive (!!) and b) you'll spend a LOT of money and time...

Best mod for myRGS was fit Mikuni carbs. 36mm. Added smooth midrange and another 10mpg to 45mpg on a run. Good luck.
