Having a garage clear out - Ignition system from a RGS for sale ? All prices plus postage at cost (from UK). Open to offers

I have boxes full of them, guess I can retire now and live off the proceeds.
 
Gave mine away to the southern dealership, oh not quite true, Brett gave me a bottle of Whiskey for them :D
 
Jeez ...  :o.  Seems the days are long gone when fellow Laverda enthusiasts used to gladly give bits away to those who could use them.  Now everyone's a budding little capitalist, it seems -  even for stuff of, at best, dubious value.

Ebay is to blame, I guess.  Just glad I gave a RGS seat to Howard, freeman's.

I dunno why they ever had ballast resistors in the first place. They're normally associated with points ignition, or a separate starting circuit to feed the coils. Neither of which Laverdas have.

I quite agree but....
When some people are prepared to spend huge amounts of cash to own a pristine bike they'll never ride, I'm not opposed to selling parts at what I consider a reasonable price or swap to restore or maintain a bike built for riding.

1.  I can give you John Wilson's explanation ... 

"NPN  silicon power transistors as used in the Bosch ignition modules have some hideous characteristics compared to today?s power devices. One such characteristic is the voltage drop across the transistor between the emitter and collector when fully conducting, known as Vc-e(sat)*.  If you multiply this Vc-e(sat) by the collector current you get the Pd or the ?Power dissipated? by the power device.

It does not take a lot of current coupled with a high Vc-e(sat) to broach the Safe Operating Area (SOA)** of a power device - in this case, the ignition module.

This is my interpretation of why Bosch slung an extra resistor of 0.9 Ohms in series with the DC resistance and impedance of the ignition coils of the day.  I suppose that Bosch did not know for certain what was going to be connected to the module as it was used not only on Laverdas".


Definitions:
* The voltage between the collector and emitter terminals under conditions of base current or base-emitter voltage beyond which the collector current remains essentially constant as the base current or voltage is increased.

** The voltage and current conditions over which the device can be expected to operate without self-damage.

"The ballast resistors were specified by Bosch to avoid burning out the ignition box transistor in the event that its coil had too low an impedance or developed a short.  Or if you left the ignition on without engine running.  So not required unless you're a paranoid German application designer!"

I hear you, Paul.  Unfortunately, it's a trend that has infected - and I use the word advisedly - the world of bevel drive Ducrappis for some time now, driving both prices up ... and bikes off the road.

it is still happening in the UK, I have been known to buy parts when I see them at very reasonable prices and sell them on later without trying to make a profit, some times I forget what I paid, I have had some parts made and do very much the same, I too will no longer hoard stuff if I think that I wont use it, and have "brought out" some hugely desirable new old stock items for recent builds, not many left.
