RGS instrument pod

G'day Paul,
The penny dropped when I started my car and watched all the dials do their business, ha ha I said to myself.
I'm running the tacho from one of the coils, as shown in the directions supplied with the WITT unit, with it set on 3 cylinders, I'll try it on 6 and see what happens.
My next step is to take the tacho out of the instrument pod and jury rig it to the battery and try tapping off the signal from different points.
Thanks for the info

Terry

Hi Terry, sorry to hear it did not work first go. I wired mine up before I fit it, I took power from the battery, and the signal direct from one coil. Once I saw it worked, I cut off the coloured LED section, then tried it again before fitting. I connected the power and signal wires to the original tacho connection points. It is a bit sluggish when I rev it in neutral, I thought it should be a bit quicker to respond to the throttle, that's why I am keen to try Piet's suggestion to set it on the six cylinder setting, and then check how it revs against the charts on JLO's site, but I've been a slack arse and have been neglecting her. I expect to get to it tomorrow.

If I have a flat or close to flat battery in my car,Mazda Tribute, the instruments do that off the rest and one cycle and back to the rest, maybe you bloke dont have enough bang wher you have tapped in to energise it,BTW I am close to clueless re the green smoke.

It is supposed to do the full sweep when the ignition is turned on, it is mentioned in the item description on eBay.

? Gray gauge face with magnified clear lens
? Gray trim ring with gray housing
? Red illuminated needle with full sweep
? Electronic Gauges has Opening Sweep Movement
? 7 color LED illumination number glow and color recall technology
(Gauge will return to previous color when vehicle is turned off)
? Fast and slow automatic color changing modes
? Set gauge to one color or automatically cycle
? Mounting and Installation hardware
? Instructions
? 2 1/16th inch gauge or 52 mm diameter

Thanks Chappo,
You know how it is, you only read the instructions once you've fucked it up.

Hi Terry, the six cylinder setting is no good. It would not indicate above 3000RPM no matter how many berries I gave it.
I checked the wiring, the top connector is the signal, the middle one is the 12v+, and the bottom one is the earth - picture attached.
I can't really offer any clues as to why yours isn't working, except to say double check your connections, and the position of the switch for the number of cylinders.
I am going to set mine back to the three cylinder setting and be done with it. It looks OK, even if it is not very accurate, it only cost me about the price of a carton of beer, not too bad. I will strap my SatNav to the bike to check the speed, count my sprocket's teeth, and then check the results with JLO's charts..... one day soon.
Cheers, Darren.

G'day Darren,
had a fiddle with the tacho over the weekend, ended up jury mounting it off the bike and got it to work, seems the needle reaction ios a bit slow but I'll see what its like when I go for a ride, tried the 6 cylinder setting and found that it didn't work at all.
Won't be able to test it for a few days, busy installing relays for the low/high beam lights.

Thanks for the info, much appreciated.

Terry

Hi Terry, strange yours doesn't work at all on the six cylinder setting. Mine seemed more responsive when I blipped the throttle on the six cylinder setting, but as I said, it was no good when I went for a ride. Crazy!
I plan on doing the headlight relay thing too, might do it when I pull it apart to switch the tacho back to the three cylinder setting.

G'day Darren,
Finally got to do a test ride over the weekend, the tacho seems to read about 200 revs low i.e. 3000rpm at 100 kays, also very slow to move when changing revs during gear changes etc. Still its a dammed sight better than having the needle bouncing all over the place :D. Thanks for all the help in sorting it out.
'While I was at it', I put relays into the lighting circuits, I ran two wires, through in-line fuse holders, directly from the battery to the relays, trying to keep the two circuits as seperate as possible, thus eliminating any 'single point of failures', don't want to loose high and low beams at the same time!
Fitted a 100/55watt H4 bulb, well worth the mod, now I can see the roos 300 metres away instead of 100.

Ride safe

Terry
