Hi there, thank you for accepting me into your forum, has anyone ever cleaned out an RGS engine mount and pressed in an alternative rubber mount
I don't know if he's an active participant in this forum but I do recall a conversation with "smiddy" about what he's been trying with different hardness polymers for his RGS mounts. If you're an ILOC member try posting this question in the club's forum where I have seen him participating - good if you can get a dialogue going on this topic.Hi there, thank you for accepting me into your forum, has anyone ever cleaned out an RGS engine mount and pressed in an alternative rubber mount
Thanks for your reply, i know Smiddy well and have seen the tool he made for repacking the mounts with poly, i was just curious to see if anyone had sourced any automotive suspension type of bush and pressed them into the housings with a bit of modificationI don't know if he's an active participant in this forum but I do recall a conversation with "smiddy" about what he's been trying with different hardness polymers for his RGS mounts. Hello Graeme,Hi there, thank you for accepting me into your forum, has anyone ever cleaned out an RGS engine mount and pressed in an alternative rubber mount
He said to me once that the ones available by a Laverda-Dealer in southern Germany would be to soft, but the (at that time) only available ones. I assume, too, they are standard items, pressed into the metal holders maybe even in the Laverda factory!?When Piero was in Sydney in 2017, we asked him about the hardness of the rubber, no information was available. Seems the engine mounts came from a supplier, possibly similar to a combine harvester ......
Nothing like that at all Lothar.I assume they are like elastomer dampers (or "MO-bearing" or "Screw isolators") like these:

Are you using these without problems or extra vibrations? These are the engine mounts from Michael Stöcker sport-connection.de
You can safe 1.6 kg
Yes I just found a local company that specialises in rebuilding obsolete mounts for vehicles etc. so there must be a few places around.I get a variety of wheels, dampers and bushes made up in Urethane. The supplier makes a mould for the wheels etc and pours the liquid Urethane of the required hardness into it. They also machine the urethane down to the required dimension. Not a cheap exercise but as always the price drops as the quantity goes up. I would expect a isolating mount to be a straight forward exercise. You need a Shore hardness meter to get the right Urethane or send them an existing mount.
If the Urethane is bonded to the inner and outer components of the mount the outcome is probably much better.Yes I just found a local company that specialises in rebuilding obsolete mounts for vehicles etc. so there must be a few places around.
Piet’s experience of making it worse is a bit of a worry, although presumably a specialist would have all the right gear.
I wonder if it would make a good difference. When I recall the big reduction in noise and snatch after replacing the primary chains and cush rubbers, I imagine that there would be an improvement, even if it seems fine now.
I have durometers for Shore A and D. They are relative cheap online now. Most shops that do this work will match a sample anyway. You need to have a box of inner sleeves and outer housings under your arm when you visit. You will be able to get a quote from a drawing. Hardness of Urethane will make very little difference to the price! Many years ago a guy in Sydney had Nolathane bushes made for his RGA but they were too hard and the bike vibrated like a bastard, the bike was sold on too another person who drilled a series of 6mm holes through the nolathane which did resolve the vibration issue.
Determining the correct Duro number is the issue. Any body got a Durometer? Just where this bike is now I don't know.
For those in Sydney it was originally Crazy's RGA that was fitted with the SFC fairing, originally blue but later resprayed orange. The last owner I knew was Ray Caruanna who sold it on.
