RGS plug gap

My new to me RGS has allways seemed boggy on the bottom (under 3000 rpm) so I thought I'd try plugs first. Pulled out a set of NGK B8EV's but couldn't find a replacement so on Wolfgangs recommendation I got a set of B8ES.

Manual said gap was .040" so I spread it to spec, put it back together and it wouldn't run ( just backfire and hiccup)

Took them out and regaped to .025" and it runs better so I'm in the range but cant help but to wonder if I am still out a bit?

Recommendations please, I don't want to call Wolfgang for this trivial stuff, Im sure he has better things to do even though he is quite willing to talk.

I think the standard gap is 0.6mm, which converts to 0.0236", so 0.025 is right in the ballpark.
