Well, not really. I chose my words carefully. I said "a more typical ring gap of 0.07mm" I didn't say a standard or within spec ring gap. 0.07 is a bit wider than you'd expect in a new installation, so i was assuming a bit of wear.
I agree that a rebore or at least the correct rings would make a better job of it. I guess that's something for Rob to work out with his mate. Would probably come down to the bloke's financial resources and how much responsibility he expects Rob to accept for a less than ideal solution.
BTW, have any of you young whipper-snappers heard of Koethurizing? I used to get it done to worn pistons when I was a young bloke and couldn't afford a re-bore and new pistons. It's basically a process where the piston skirt is shot-peened from the inside to expand it enough to reduce piston to bore clearance. Most often used in conjunction with a light hone to the bore. It was a cheap way of eliminating piston slap and would extend the life of an engine before a re-bore was necessary. It was quite an effective fix but I've not heard of anyone doing it for maybe 40 years. I'm wondering if there are still people around who do it.
Cheers,
