Roller Big ends with a Laverda mention.

Very innaresting stuff. i have to admit, I never imagined large big end clearances aren't necessarily a bad thing. And a Laverda crank will have double the radial clearance on the big end that a std Ducati crank will have (as Brooke Henry says 'Ducati got it wrong'). Metal deforming in engines is not something you can easily get your head around - but it's very real. Maybe some lessons for Zane owners and fixers in there somewhere.
 
The bit I found interesting was him saying he knew but didn't twig to its full effect. That's so common in Science, another form of Lateral Thinking. Edward Debono would be impressed.
 
Watched it all the way through, very interesting. How a 4 thou play big end ran in a race bike I don’t understand, I would have thought it would have knocked itself to bits in seconds. Roller bearing cranks in Jap bikes are super reliable running 10/40 and tight tolerances so I think there is more to this than meets the eye. I’ve used plastigauge to measure Japanese shell bearings and there is no wider part of the con rod eye so I don’t know what motors he’s talking about . Sounds to me a bit like the Norton solution for a skipping rope crank was to make barrel shaped rollers to allow the crank to flex- not right but a solution all the same.
 
The thing that stands out is he is actually sharing a life time of experience with bevel's.

Indeed. He knows a thing or two about them!! i rang him once to discuss resleeving a pair of SFC rods i have. He said he longer does them as they weren't sufficiently robust. And with Carillos and Arrows offering such high quality kit, there's probably no demand.
