Rusty nuts

A lot of the nuts and bolts on argy and all of them on the 900 and SF3 are rusty, is there an affordable way to make them look OK without replacing them with stainless at great expense? I know Caswells has plating kits but that's $150+ and painting is no good as it gets messed up first time one puts them on. What do the restorers do???

Send mine off in batches to be bright zinc plated, cheap and effective. Need to find a company with a tumbler. Can do all sorts of bits, I have a nice stash of original yellow nylon nylocs all replated to satisfy the most ardent of rivet counters, brake light switches etc. etc.

When I enquired about zinc plating in Perth it was a minimum cost of $60 up to 20kg. Reckon I'd have at least 20kg in various boxes, many original lav ones too.

last time I arranged to get some nuts/bolts zinc plated (was for a work project - not a bike) the idiot contractor hot-dip galvanised them. All the threads were totally clogged with Zinc. About 2000 high-tensile structural bolts and nuts ended up at the metal recyclers. They were big buggers too, something like M30 x 600mm holding-down bolts to be cast into concrete foundations (for transmission line towers). I dunno how much it cost the contractor to replace them all, but I wouldn't have wanted to be the bloke explaining the cost blow-out to his boss!

I buy my stainless fasteners through these guys. Free delivery to the door if the order is over AUD$25. If you value your time and add that to the cost of farting around finding, delivering then picking up from platers, not to mention putting up with their peculiar natures, then these guys are the way to go.

Link it up Davo

Yeah I'm thinking of going that way Davo, might be easier. Will have to work out what size and thread they all are and order them all at once I guess.

drikko,

Whats the plan with the 900 money wise ?
A stainless engine bolt kit can be had for about $80,and you can swap them over one at a time.
If you remove them all to have em re-zinked,the engine will fall apart.

Get a parts manual and make a list of all the nuts and bolts--should cost under $300 to do the lot.
Then you can clean up the originals and have re-zinked at your leisure.

Remember that it is a $45k bike when restored,so over capitalising isnt an issue.
