Series 1 180 - Generator warning light

I?ve never had one of these, so I thought I?d try and get it back
I?ve got continuity through the LH clocK, bulb and the lead all the way to the connector...where do I look next?

The regulator/rectifier.
Check that wire all the way to the idiot light.
Of all the BTZ type triples I have owned only the 79 Jota had a working Generator light.
What's yours?

Ha!

...a bit sketchy , I always thought it was 1980 because its on a V plate but according to the numbers (just a tad pre-7237), according to Laverdamania register (how accurate is that?), its a 1981

Thanks Grant

the ususal reason for anon working charge light is that the regulator/rectifier has been changed from the original Bosch type and the replacement does not have the terminal to power it, Slaters were selling this type of replacement for years, and so have some of the electrical aftermarket suppliers.

The correct type can be obtained with a bit of difficulty and some buying abroad.
does yours look like this original? if not then count the wires coming out of your replacement and report back.

ps the fuses are not original

not sure on this one, it looks as though you have a rectifier as fitted to very early bikes, that also had CDI ignition, but from the coils shown, yours looks like you have BTZ ignition (or aftermarket using ND coils). as I said not sure on this one, my own experience is much more with the BTZ bikes which had a reg/rect as shown in the pic above. It may be that the early type rectifier does not drive the red light, but that will take a more learned boffin than me to answer.

It may be that the early type rectifier does not drive the red light,
You're right Clem - it doesn't. Would need to fit a reg/rect that supports a warning light.  As you know, the Ignitech R82 does - ?42 but P+P not cheap at ?25 (UK). The Electrex RR51 alternative appears to be out of stock.
As previously noted, only suitable for Bosch single phase alternators, not ND 3 phase.

I note with interest your news regards Elextrex, and specifically the RR51, the spot on answer for Ducati, Laverda and others. 20 odd years ago I occassionally popped round to their place in my lunch break, 2 mins, fide from work with the sandwich shop half way.

A lifetime ago now. I don't have the RR51 myself, I have fitted one to an LB 125 Custom, and most recently tried to by an reg-rec to suit my 2001 Caponord. They point blank refused to tell me which one is perfect, exceeding OEM... Iirc correctly it is RR110, models listed include Pan European? Any how's that retails to the great unwashed at ?110 at time of press, probs + Vat & Postage. My friendly professional and generally unwashed friend of 30 years got the info, ordered the relevent c/w next day delivery. I trailered my Caponord over, his colleage insisted that he needing to fit it, otherwise no guarantee (connector plug needed re-organisation of the std. spade connectors in the housing and trimming to suit). Caponord remained strapped to trailer for the hour of so's work and chit chat. TMV? wiring services made money and I paid ?90 in cash.

I hope Titch is still in business, a good man. His colleague is yesterday celebrating his first year in his new, forever(?) home in a really quite rural and very French part of... France! :D

Thank you so much for what you do behind the scene, Rob, I have an inkling of what it is likely to be like... I doff my hat. Appears that I'm am pretty damn good at "herding cats", no really I am! LOL. Thing is, mine are indeed cats, and they are most unusual, but they is still cats, c/w their tabby tales (sic) and cuteness...

Keep well and stay safe.

Afternoon, men.
Clem was right, the rectifier has been changed and the replacement has not output for a generator light. The end of the red/blue wire To warning light Was found tucked away safely on further inspection.
Thank you all.

Stan, if you want to get that charge light working in your revcounter again then you can fit this little electronic device. It?s cheap and easy to fit, I have fitted a couple of them and it has the added advantage that it will also give an overcharge warning if the voltage exceeds 16V.
The one you want is the Standard Charge Warning Light.

Those Elextrix regulator rectifiers look like they are only 2 phase????

Hey Maurice.

RR's generally come in single or 3 phase variants (Electrex makes both).  But I've never seen a 2 phase RR, unless it's a 3 phase device with one phase circuit knackered  ;)

Laverda alternators (post HKZ) have two phase coils in the alternator, but their power outputs are synchronised so you can wire them in parallel to create a single phase output and use a single phase RR (older HKZ systems are true single phase with one charging coil). You can do the same with HKZ systems that been upgraded to a modern ignition system (as most probably have been by now) with the extra phase coil added to the alternator. There are several single phase RR's available with a pilot light output that you can wire to your GEN light.

Unfortunately for people like myself with 3 phase alternator upgrades, (last time I checked) there are no 3 phase RRs available with a pilot light output. So I have a little LED voltmeter on my dash.

Cheers,
Cam
