There are other Bosch ignition points that can be made to fit with not much effort.

I realize its a PITA, but a close up showing the condition of the contacts and the central lobe would allow me to see if it's functional or not.

There are other Bosch ignition points that can be made to fit with not much effort.

Thank you- please tell me how or where I may buy these- I didn't realize the points and contacts could be replaced individually. I've tried looking up the Bosch number but it leads to nowhere and my understanding is that it's an old VW part. I just want one as a spare-

If you search on here you'll find all the info you need on what currently available Bosch parts can be used and the mionor mods required to make them fit the SF backing plate.

It would have been pretty bizarre if the only way to replace the points was to buy a complete backing plate!!

Bosch points off a few German cars can be made to fit. VW beetle points being the most common. You will need to remove the pivot pin from the points plate to fit VW points as the pin is part of the points. Take your points to a auto parts store to finds ones that will fit.

And the most important thing to remember, the advance mechanism must be cleaned and lubed on a regular basis. It is rare to see one not worn out which is why most fit electronic ignition. Both my 750's still have points.

Even old Holdens (GM in Australia) had Bosch points. 1955-1970s. Wouldn't be surprised that there are several options out there.
