Hey all
so i thinks i need to refresh my starter clutch on my 74 750 - it spins and makes a lot of racket on occasion - manual say i need a special tool to pull it off -is that correct or has someone found a home method that works but doesn't f'it all up in the process

thx!
Mike

Any puller will do if you're careful not to damage the pulley or polish out any burrs if you do.
You can use an oil filter tool to block the freewheel when you unscrew the nut. IT IS A LEFT HAND THREAD.

Cool thx Paul!

Watch out for the woodruff key that sometimes falls out as you pull it off the shaft.  No need to ask me how I know..

It all falls out.
I usually wrap up the freewheel in a plastic bag when I pull it off because rollers, springs and pushers tend to jump all over the place.

The back disc plate of the starter clutch where rivited = SHIT!

They became loose and the Dogs jammed and rattled - Period,

Either Mig Weld the back plate on to the fly wheel or tap an use small bolts to hold the back back plate on to fly wheel.

The Factory Rivets never worked.

You cannot damage the starter clutch per se by over tightening the reverse thread outboard nut, nor should you adjust the freeplay of the freewheel sprocket with the amount you tighten the nut. There should be a couple of mm freeplay (end float) on the freewheel with the nut fully tightened  (someone can specify this if they want to). On mine all that nut needs is a couple of taps on the socket bar with a plastic hammer against compression after it is brought home, it has never loosened on me.

If that is the case, the internal taper has widened and the clutch is scrap.

If all is in order, the clutch cannot be over tightened.  If overtightened, the first thing to let go should be the thread in the nut.

Rivets work fine, given they are installed correctly...

Had this conversation before, Ron. I replaced my starter freewheel sprocket cos I worked for the state Lav dealer and thought it time - 200,000km+ and rivets still firmly in place on the clutch part. Unfortunately I fitted the new sprocket without checking end float and THEN the thing blew my starter to bits ... rivets still holding nice and firm. I think I still have it and will use it on this build. Not sure what happened to yours, Ron, but suspect something else was amisss to cause it.
