very useful information Craig, but 3M0102LB shows as suitable for both 750 twins and RGS ???
<snip>

Gonna be RGS, Clem - see piccie attached.  But you're right of course - can't believe everything you read in a catalogue, eh?  :D.)

Clem,

The reference is for the 4-valve Zane shitheaps... but even that is incorrect as the 2-bolt flange was phased out with the introduction of the 750s.

The basic starter fits the triples and OR600 onwards and ends with the final air-cooled 668.  Triples and twins use different gears on the starter drive shaft.

Paid $1,600 CDN for my 70 750 SFO and inadvertently hit the starter button while down shifting into 2nd from 80+mph at 7000rpm and shredded the starter to ash which cost me $900 CDN to replace the ND starter from the Breganzie factory from Italy back in 72.

That's why I insist, if you do not have a clutch lever starter solenoid cut out switch, that you ground wire the starter relay through the transmission neutral switch. Particularly a disastrous scenario using LUCAS bar controls. I love Lucas bar controls - But !

Clem: Hear me, the starter clutch dogs were never designed to disengage the starter at 7000rpm and will blow the starter clutch back plate  off the flywheel.

MNXVDC

short form for the very well liked Marnix Van Der Schalk

not porn, unless I have missed something

Never saw that short form before Clem, but was clear to me nonetheless. MvdS is more common. Bet it was the combination with the sigar that made the difference, but if you like one, feel free!

Nice anecdote: In order to convince Massimo to choose the ND starter, they had prepared rooms with extreme conditions inside at the Bosch factory: heat, freezing cold, ultra wet. In each room they demonstrated the perfect functioning of the starter. We all know the outcome, and think we all agree it was an excellent choice from a reliability point of view for one of the first motorcycle engines with no kickstarter.

They should have done the same on their own 1000cc starter production instead of being forced to add in 1976 a 6mm ventilation hole to avoid condensation and corrosion inside.
