SF1 swingarm spacers

There are going to be a lot of questions!

What is the story with these swingarm spacers - first one came off when I pulled the swingarm out - second one looked like it was just held onto the frame by grease but when I prised it off it was loose on one side but seem to be weakly attached to the frame on the other side. They look like they were both once part of the frame as they have black paint on them. OD 38, ID 14 2mm thick.

Can they just be used as spacers or do they need reattaching to the frame?

They are an integral part of the frame and do not seperate without reason. Incorrect swingarm spacing with too much tension on the spindle will rip them off their spot welds.

I have a frame that came from a wreckers and one of the washers was missing - I always just added a loose one of the correct size and once the spindle was bolted up it was fixed in place and I never had any trouble with it. The spindle basically does the job of the spot welds.

That was what it looked like to me. I have a friend who who has a lathe and is a dab hand with welding so the frame will go there for a couple of minor repairs and will probably make up some new spacers and weld them on while we are at it.

Basically, they're just plain, flat washers, probably simply stamped from sheet steel and are meant as a frame reinforcement at the spindle mount. No groove. The groove in yours has resulted through wear from a loose swingarm spindle, allowing the distance tube to rub on the spacer (looks a lot like siezed bushes having picked up the inner bearing/distance tube). Replicate the groove, you'll replicate the original problem!

Check the distance tube for wear, it should fit snugly inside the frame, between the 2 attached spacers/washers. Overall width of the swingarm pivot at the bushes should be about 0.3-0.5mm less than the tube/inside frame width.

The original bushes and tube will be knackered anyway, neither are available off the shelf anymore. I see a needle bearing conversion looming on the horizon...
