SF1 wiring compared to SF2 wiring

I've recently acquired an SF1 in quite good condition but with some odd behaviour in the instrument warning lights that I'm trying to sort out. Using the wiring diagram in the green bible has been a bit "challenging". I've downloaded the nice coloured wiring diagram for the SF2/3. How close is the wiring in the SF1 to the SF2? I have the Lucas handlebar switches.

I used the green book diagram to re wire my SF1 and it works. Are you clear as to how the key works relative to lights & ignition?
I don’t have indicators on my bike so the only lights that operate in the clocks are the green neutral and the red in the rev counter.

Sorry don’t know how this compares to SF2 but obviously SF2 has ND controls so possibly different connections/colour wires.

More knowledgeable owners on here will no doubt comment.

My problem is the "Beam" and "Flash" lights are on all the time.
 
From memory the flash indicator light is from the wires to each flasher, it is not itself connected to earth. The high beam light is a wire from the high beam and earths via the common earth in the meter (green).

Thanks for this information, however, I've got ND instruments. Based on your answer does your suggestion would work? I don't have an ammeter.
 
You REALLY need to get a multimeter - they're dirt cheap and you just need something that can detect 12V. Even just a 12V 'pen' light circuit tester. I personally love the function on my multimeter that has a buzzer function that operates when a complete circuit is detected (eg, when checking which switch position connects what-to-what, be it ignition switch or handlebar switch.

I converted my SF1 to SF2 switchgear and ignition switch. The difference is that the headlight off/park/on with the SF2 is in the left ND switchblock. The main diff is that the strip connector of the SF1 is under the RH side of the tank and way back under the rear of the tank on the SF2.

One huge drama I had back then was that with the new switchgear every time I hit the horn button a fuse would blow - I was an electrickery ignoramus back then and it turned out that the SF2 switch block has an earth wire and the horn button earths an active, whereas the Lucas switch was wired differently (can't remember exactly, but it's a completely different setup).

High beam idiot light is simply a feed from the high beam circuit itself and earths through the gauge (as Tippie pointed out). You probably need to have the tacho cable connected, as this is often the only earth connection to the gauges.

Also as Tippie mentioned, the flasher idiot light has the left indicator feed going to one side and the right indicator feed going rto the other (NOT feed one side, earth the other). It works by grounding the circuit via the non operating indicator circuit - it negates the need for two separate R/L wires. If using LED idiot bulbs, it won't work, as they rely on uni-directional circuitry.

If I were you, I'd pull every wire out and start from scratch. Otherwise you'e simply chasing your tail and messing your head around!
 
I appreciate the input. Fortunately I'm not new to any of this owning. I've got several multimeters as well as a couple of power probes (marvelous devices). The reason for the question about the ignition switch was to determine just how big a mess I might have and what end result I should be aiming for vis a vis the switch.

And my answer refers to ND instruments. You do not need an ammeter to test things like this, a voltmeter, and ohmmeter (multimeter) is a big help. You can also just trace where the wires connect up.
 
Normaly,
Pos 0 = there is only the Key in
Pos 1 = u can use Starter and Lights and Horn, all elektrical Parts.
Pos 2 = its for Parkinglight only. Needs the correct Funktion of the Diode.

If the Diode works wrong it is possible to start the Motor when there is no Key in.
