SF1 Wiring

Have been considering a rewire of my SF1 - Original stuff has been hacked about a bit - it's not desparate but would be nice to do.

Has anyone done this and have photos of end result? I am not sure I really like all of the spade connectors being crammed under the tank - has anyone come up with an alternative?

Thanks

Chris

yes, we rewired Grahame's 750 SF couple of months ago, junked all of the original wiring and a lot of the electrical items and started from scratch
wiring is not 100% complete in the attached photos but will give you an idea

we use an electronic ignition using an Ignitech box and our own trigger boards so we throw the two bulky coils away and use a single dual pole Nology Pro-Fire coil, that frees up a bunch of space
never liked the horns hanging down below the steering head on a 750 so we dispense with them and use a single small horn mounted inside the side cover
change out the fuse box to a modern unit, same with starter relay
dispense with the Bosch regulator and fit a Sachse adjustable regulator
Owner wanted indicators so we installed small LED indicators, LED Flasher can and the later Nippon Denso switch blocks
also used the later full size gauge mount instead of the short unit that breaks all the time

You like my 70 1/2 SFO. A 120 mph +750SF Breganzie.

I spent a life time taking her to the top.

FUCK the Foot Ball Head Light electrical.

You can't get a lighter or tighter fitting 3/4 faring then a Modified Rickman to keep you dry in the rain for either a 750 or 3cly Jota.

Don't get mad at me Red but your bar controls, gauges, shocks... etc are not correct and you don't  have the correct drums on her and that has not be a Lucas Prince of Darkness ignition key Sx on her ;o)

Chris,
you are starting from zero, then easy to make a much neater installation without all the connectors.

Red's solution looks very tidy, and well done (as expected :). Personally I would have the fuses/base behind the side covers or under the seat where it is easier to get at, but that is purely personal.
As a suggestion, have a look at the pre BTZ SFC wiring diagram in the green book as a starting point.  Simple and easily done.  And even if you are running indicators/blinkers, they are a simple addition with regard to wiring.

would love to hear a few stories about it!  (notworthy)

Ron,
You need to work out I build customers bikes to their specifications, not to what I or the rivet counters want
this owner did not want the Lucas switchgear, or the original gauge mount, or the shocks, or a lot of other items that he was not happy about so I modified everything to suit his requests, it is the owners choice
and before you try and slag off the owner, he bought this bike 40 years ago and it has been his only bike since then
drums are correct though, I did not change them, just restored them

Thanks everyone - as usual some amazing Redax work!

I have a Sachse(sp?) ignition - it seems if I can reduce the size of the coils then that would give me some room under the tank for a better arrangement of the connector block which is the thing I really don't like about the original SF1 wiring. Any suggestions on what coils would be a replacement for the stock?

Red - where are the coils mounted on that bike?

Chris

Chris,
As you already have a Sachse ignition then you can use a single dual outlet 3 ohm coil if you wish, you don't necessarily need to run with two coils
we use either 2 x single pole Nology ignition coils or 1 x dual pole Nology ignition coil depending on how we wish to set up the engine
we also have billet coil mounting plates in stock that bolt on to the front coil mounting strap and are drilled and tapped to suit the Nology coils

on the Twisted Twins we are building at the moment for example we will mount a pair of coils using the adaptor plate in the area where the original front coil was mounted as we need a separate coil for each cylinder to run the 270 degree crank phase

you can just see the coil mounting plate in the headstock area on the first photo I posted showing the right hand side of the bike
not certain why the photos loaded so large but if you click on that photo it will open the Flickr page and you will get a better view of the coil

DavidH, attached photos show the 4 blade fuse box mounted behind the left hand side cover, directly below the horn

By all means - Take care of your Customers Bike Red - I did that for years.

Now I'm too old to give a damn and see faces of dead motorcylists when I dream.
