SFC 1000 Ignition

The time has come - I need to change the ignition system. But which one - is it the Moto Witt, the Redax/Saches or the ii system from OZ (if still available). Has anybody got any strong opinions/advice/ideas on which is the best one, or are they all much of a muchness? My bikes got the FI Cams and the Dellortos are bored out to 36 mm if that's of any use in the selection. Oh yes I will throw out the Bosch GT 40T Coils as well, so any recommendations there would be great.
I'm quite tecnically challenged! - especially in the electrical fields so I did struggle when reading how to fit the Moto Witt and ii systems but maybe it's not that hard??
Cheers,
Keith.

There is also an Ignitech system but I hear you need to know what you are doing as it is very programmable.
Depends where you live. In the UK you can buy Witt from Ralph in Motalia, and I think Keith in Glasgow does some kits.
I think IIS is out of the game these days although someone may have one somewhere.
Also OCT would have a system.
I am sure there are many others (Wolfgang et al).
Up to you.

IIS are not available anymore so that narrows down the field a bit

DMC unit is okay, uses a single Optical trigger with 3 cutouts in the rotor
available from all the normal dealers

for a 120 engine, you don't need the Redax/Sachse system, you just need the Sachse system by itself
Redax/Sachse system is for the 180 Series 1 engines where I include a 250 watt alternator in addition to the Sachse ignition system
120 engines don't need an alternator upgrade
the 120 Sachse unit uses 3 x Hall Effect triggers and a flying magnet system
you can buy through Keith in Glasgow or buy direct online using Volker's web based store

Are those Bosch coils no good then?

The SFCs came with Motoplat coils as standard & I've yet to hear anyone say anything good about them, but I've no experience of the Bosch coils...

even the best electric components suffer from 25 years of usage (or even of no usage, just of age...).

Best is to replace them, even if they are not yet broken. One thing less to consider when a problem appears...

Keith,

Fitting an aftermarket system is not at all that difficult, reckon anybody that knows which end of a screwdriver he needs to hold can manage! :D

The DMC is a doddle to fit, no special tools being needed for the 120s, guess much the same applies for the Sachse kit.

Personally, I haven't had any bad experiences with the stock coils, so I tend to stick with them, Motoplat or Nippon Denso.  Why do you want to bin the Boschs?  Neither the bike nor the ignition have great demands on the coils, just need to have the correct primary resistance.

Don't matter which route you go, the benefit will be far greater than you can imagine.

Can also supply the DMC if interested...including translation service if needed!

Thanks for the replies on this you guys. Interesting comments on the Bosch Coils, because when I mentioned these on the old Laverda forum I got a few negative responses about them!! Nothing specific, but just that they are crap! And just recently I read somewhere (possibly on the ii systems install/general info pages?) that they are only good for bikes with points.
Mine have been on the bike for about 50,000 odd kms now and haven't let me down................ maybe when I do get the new ignition (whichever one) that might throw something up?
Anyway I'll scatch my head for a few days on this, get some prices for the ignition(s) and go from there.
Cheers,
Keith.

Run my RGS with the original coils and DMC ignition without any problems.

even with the resistors removed, the spark is very limited on these coils. compare that to a Guzzi ignition, the spark is WAY different. Not sure this is just the coils, but if you source them from the right source, all three come quite cheap and as said will for sure work better than a 25 or more years old item. Just my 2 cents. But if they are not broken yet, you can also wait until the cable brakes or they brake, might still work for the next 10 - 20 years without any problem. Who knows.

Keith,
If I understand your original post correctly you say you have Bosch GT40T coils installed which are a 4 ohm non resistor type coil.
Like a big old car coil.
Standard coils on an SFC should be the TEK units rated at 3 ohms.

The mention of the Bosch coils is probably what caused the negative feedback on the old forum as most people would presume that these are similar to what is used on the 750's with points.

If you were changing ignitions I'd recommend installing a set of Dyna mini-coils in 3 ohm resistance but depends on how much loose cash you have.
Will work great with the Sachse or the DMC

Another coil option you may wish to consider is Accel.  They deliver a strong spark and are dead reliable. As long as you are in there upgrading, you should consider new secondary wires as well.  Accel offers solid core wires and of course there are NGK resistor caps to complement your new system.

Hi Keith

when Red refers to the "TEK" coils he is talking about Japanese coils that are on many fairly recent 2000 + model years like Kawasaki EX 250's, for example. They are perfect specification, three ohm resistance, and will work well with amy of your ignition upgrade choices

if you search eBay for something like "Kawasaki EX 250 coil" that searchg will typically kick up dozens of for sale listings like this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Kawasaki-EX250-GPZ500-Ninja-ignition-coil-pack-TEC-KP03-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem45fbbc8ab0QQitemZ300576180912QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

three of the single TEK coils work well on any of the 120's like the RGS or SFC 1000, and will even fit into the stock mounting brackets.

Been checking out information/pricing on the net for coils, including comments on my Bosch coils. Getting a bit "twitchy" about using these, and there's plenty of options out there anyway.
Those mini Dyna coils definitely look the part Red, but yeah they require a bit of loose change alright! - even with the NZ Dollar high at the moment.
I might go hunting for some of these TEK coils you mentioned Paul and see how we go there.............or there's the Accell.......or others.
Cheers,
Keith.

Looks like I may have found two off dual ouput Dyna miniature Coils. They're priced at $250.00 NZD which looks good to me, although there are 2 different coils listed on the website - the DC1-2 & the DC1-3 with the only difference I can see is the price. Does anybody know the difference in them, and does it matter? (I'm yet to find out which particular model the ones for sale are). And also I've seen/read somewhere that with one coil servicing 2 cylinders, the spare output from the other coil goes to earth? :D
Cheers,
Keith.

I use the mini Dynas, DC3-2 you need three single output coils on a 120 bike, the twin/single arangement is for the earlier 180 motors. The Dyna's come in packs of two...couple of pics of a set of three installed on an RGS.

Thanks for that Keith. I probably would have gone and bought them otherwise - Oh well I'll keep looking.
Cheers,
Keith.
