SFC/RGS owners...

jlo,

Thanks for the Picture. Now I see the difference. The later brace certainly adds a fair bit of strength to the downtubes below the headstock.

I have #3200 and it does not have these extra braces. I woder when the factory decided to add these?
Also I got your message re the registry, thanks.

Lothar,
I will be home on Thursday so I will have a look and post the numbers then.
Cheers
Bruce

Hi Bruce,

thanks, really appreciated!! :-)

I am not sure when they started to add this additional bracing but if it really was done as a factory modification right from the start, it must have been done to the very last view ones only. I think the highest SFC number is below 3.500 and the first one (besides the 0001...  :D) is somewhere in the ballpark of 2750 - 2800 (2795 first known one). With a total of roughly 520 or so produced (1st series produced in 1985 with roughly 200 - 250 bikes and the second series being produced in 1987 or so with roughly 250 - 270 bikes me thinks), I guess the modification was introduced with the secound series. If I am right here and the last known one is 3.448, the modification must have been introduced somewhere between frame no 3100 and 3200 I guess.

Hope that helps

Lothar

Hi Lothar,

No worries.
If mine is 3200 it must have been after that.
I think this is one of the great things about Laverda.
Truely Hand Made means that every one is just a bit different.
I look forward to seeing more of your new SFC's as you bring them back to Lothar standard.
Cheers

:o what a mess... sure there is a logic behind it somehow, but - which one???

I can only assume that these numbers have to do with local homologations, f.e. that an SFC (as it is a different model than the RGS or RGA) may not use the same Frame-Number syntax or so.

That is really weird ...

Interesting, that almost anything is known or has been written about from Laverda, but not about the SFC's and their history, their frame-number specifications and specialities...

You might be onto a loser trying to untangle this Lothar, the factory were on the ropes when they were punting out SFC's, I dare say tutonic annotation of numbers was pretty low on the priority list at the time.
Good luck with it none the less, found a box of new indicator lenses the other day, happy to trade with something if you are still stuck.

    Keith.

Lenses... ? yammi... let me know what you are looking for, maybe I can help... Have a Jota fairing with turn signals (but no brackets and screen) in mint condition... :-) How many lenses could I get for it??  :-*

Lothar, don't worry too much about the rules used at the factory... As you already know, they used parts as they came on the shelves and this is even more true about the very late bikes produced in 1988. My own SFC had Jota 120 instruments when it was built as the factory didn't have any Veglia clocks available! As for the frames, it can be related to a special batch, or to homologation needs or whatever, surely nothing rational.

That's a lot of bracing JLO! My two weren't like that.
When I get it back, Lothar, I'll check the frame numbrer...

Lothar, it seems that there was a factory kit which included the strengthening plates /gussets but also a tube that is welded above the the header pipes accross the down tubes.

There was also a factory mod for frames that had already cracked?

In any case there seems to have been quite a few threads on this on the old MSN site (search "SFC frame").

lothar-theres a set of rgs indicators on e-bay(cant work out how to give you a link)
international sellers-3rd page-there up to a dollar at moment!

Ralph,

The factory kit was meant for repairing cracked frames.  I fitted the kit to several RGS/SFCs, with a bit of modifying it even fits 180 frames!  It was issued almost at the same time the factory included the additional gusseting to the SFC, although this was totally different.

The many cracked RGS and SFC frames notioned the factory to take a course of action, rare enough for an italian bike manufacturer at the time!

Thanks, but the shipping costs of this guy are incredibly high to Germany (payed once 55 Pounds or so for shipping a barrel...). Also I guess after you posted that publically instead of sending me a PN, the price will go through the roof...  :-[ To many people here on the forum just reading and taking advantage of your kind intended hint...

we'll see...

:D :D :D :D

Lothar,

Mine is marked
LAV 1000 RGS/1 *3200*
DGM 50736 OM
The machine was imported into Australia from USA. No idea of its history before that.
Import papers showed it as a 1974 SFC 1000. When I tried to correct them it was going to be too much hassle so the bike is registered as 1974 Lav SFC 1000.
In OZ I think this meens pre ADR so no requirements for indicators and a bunch of other stuff.
Probably valid for Classic Rego ??

Jeeze its nice to be home after 7 weeks  :D

I am about to a redax visit for new Mikuni's, Wolfgang exhaust and general cool Laverda experience.
:D :D :D
Cheers
Bruce
