SFC1000 seat base

Guys

I know this has been discussed a number of times by various of us, but a quick update on MY problem - in short, my seat base has more broken bits.

Weak points of the plastic SFC1000 seat bases are the 'nose' pieces (tapered at front end of seat to match up to sides of fuel tank), and the passenger cowl fixings. In both cases the plastic breaks.

I'm not aware of replacement bases. Boba, if you read this has the SFC1000 seat base come to you for a carbon copy yet? Otherwise I could investigate getting molds made here (NZ) but would hope to sell some bases to cover mold costs.

Has anyone got any repair suggestions/recomendation?

Regards,
Andre

Hi Andre,
I had the same problem with my seat base with cracks and broken off bits. Fibreglass was the answer for me - went to the paint shop and they had fibreglass blanket about 1mtr square for bugger all and the goo and the hardener as well. I'm no expert at using fibreglass (in fact this was my first time!) but I managed to repair it and it's held together now for a couple of thousand kms.
Cheers,
Keith.

still did not find a box large enough.

Fibreglass blankets, Epoxy and hardener are available at Obi, Bauhaus and the likes, more than you are willing to work with...

must find a box... !!  :-[

Try your local Bunnings. They usually have a large assortment at the front of the store for free.

Lothar,

Your local produce store (Obst/Gem?seh?ndler) should have an abundance of suitable and sturdy boxes.
Just watch out for banana boxes from South-America, in case you have arachnophobia :D

those boxes will only take the seat base of an SFC 1000 if I cut it in pieces... You need a box of the size of 120cm x 50 cm x 70 cm or so - not easy to find. And if you want to put both the seat and the tank into one box, you will need to have a box that is roughly 1,20 x 1,00 x 80cm. No way you find these at your vegetable or fruit dealer...  ::)

Not to talk about that you won't be able to ship it anymore by German Post or the likes, you will need a proper transport organization...

Are we wasting band width discussing box sizes now?

FFS, get 2 boxes and join them together.
Done right it's as strong as one complete box.
I do it from time to time, no issues in transport.

I have sent Laverda tanks all over the world, and never had an issue finding the right box. Last time I used a box from an HP Printer (model escapes me) and trimmed the packing foam to protect the tank in the box. I've also done what Grant suggested, sliding 2 moving boxes into each other when a suitable box wasn't at hand, in fact I sent Grant a complete seat that way. And how friggin' long and wide is a SFC1000 seat base anyway???

I think we must be talking at cross porpoises here - when I read "seat base" I'm thinking of the black plastic thing, underneath the foam, which bolts to the red fibreglass seat unit (the bit that the parts book calls the "rear fairing")

Oh - you might be right - I thought the fibreglass base is meant... as it is very fragil, it needs a lot of padding. Tank alone is not a problem (I have a box for the tank), but the seat unit is.

also keep in mind: there are (at least) two different ones available, one with a rounded part to take the tyre when suspension is fully compressed, one with a more hard angel shaped area. Also the bases for the foam are different in that area...

Best will be, i send both over to Boba (once I found the right box...) so that he can copy both that fit together.

Andre: which one do you have? rounded or angled shape under the seat base?

thanks
