Shannon’s roadside assistance

Got my fleet of bikes and cars insured with Shannon’s. I’ve got roadside assistance from the NRMA for the family truckster but that’s it. They want to charge you for each vehicle. Spoke to Shannon’s yesterday, they are doing Australia wide assistance with 100 km free towing for $240. This is for up to 8 vehicles. I signed up. 4 Lavs, Guzzi, Suzuki, couple of cars. That would have been over $1000 with NRMA. Not that I will ever break down..........

Marty, I'm surprised NRMA don't have an option to cover all vehicles in one policy at cheaper rates (After all, Shannons will no doubt be using the various state based organisations to deliver the service).
RACQ have Ultra or Ultimate Care where you have one nominated vehicle (whoever is driving) and then covers the policy holder for any vehicle they are driving (No limit on numbers, don't have to list them - obviously not commercial, rental or heavy vehicles).
Works well for me as I have the family car as the nominated vehicle (wife drives it also) and other vehicles including all motorbikes, other car and associated tows are covered when I am driving (And of course anyone else's vehicle I am driving as long as I have my card I suppose).
Ultra is $212 pa and Ultimate is $292 pa (Ultimate has higher mileage provisions & use limits etc)

The days of happy to help are well over for the NRMA, you get quoted the rules and there is zero wiggle room. I get it's a business and not the happy Co-Op it was. I have the top level of cover for my car assist with all the bush trips I do. Hard to change after 40 years of membership.

I've never had any kind roadside assistance scheme. On the rare occasions I needed help I'd call a mate to organise something. I've also helped out stranded friends before so it all works out in the end. We look after each other.

I guess it's an advantage living on an island where you can't get more than a few hour's drive away from anywhere else. So it's not too big an ask to go with a trailer or van and pick up a broken motorbike from anywhere. I can't remember the last time I needed to get a car towed. Even if there's been a problem I've always managed to cobble together some kind of bodge to limp home. I suppose that's not so easy with modern cars that are controlled by computer. If the magic smoke leaks out of the computer, you're buggered. I guess that's why I've never owned a modern car. I like things I can fix.

If I was about to embark on a trip around Australia like Marty, I'd consider signing up for something. Good to know that Shannons has a scheme. I have all my vehicles insured with them.

Interesting, I have the top level of road side assistance with the RAA for around $200/year. Which is suppose to cover me nationally with accommodation, vehicle recovery etc, and was reciprocated by the interstate auto clubs when I travel.
But reading between the lines of these few posts sounds like I my not have the cover I thought I had.
Bloody goal posts keep changing.:sneaky:

Any way what happened to all the Laverda specific smileys ?

Pretty much, fingers crossed. There is a reason why Insurance Companys own most of those big buildings in every CBD.

At best theyre gonna tow you to a town centre, if you canr fix a lav on the side of the road then your toast, so good that they can get you to a pub I guess

Hey Marty, why are you paying for roadside assistance? In the circumnavigation of Oz thread you mentioned 2 support vehicles, so you're taking your own recovery team with you. You must be a belt and braces kind of man if you're getting additional cover :)

RACQ members get $0.04 discount on Fuel at Puma.... Pays my membership each year for the diesel I use.. but I have never used them!!

I have never used roadside assistance for any bike and on occasion have managed to move to and leave at a (helpful) stranger's property (and once at the back of a pub) while I fixed it or hitched home and retrieved myself, but that becomes a bit harder out the back of woop woop.
I have had a car towed after waiting hours for another vehicle (the days before mobile phones) on a dirt road in the middle of nowhere and it is invaluable back up.
I never even had it with the bikes until recently when I was trying to add another car to RACQ and found it cheaper to go the option to cover any vehicle I drive so the bike's coverage are basically incidental.................
