Shock positions.

Decisions decisions

Having spent last winter bringing the Formula Mirage back to life I am torn - I like the look of the Formula body work but am finding the poor fuel capacity a pain in the arse. I land up looking for fuel after approx 80 miles - not good.

So I have been looking at options to overcome this but I do not want to do any thing that will stop me reverting to the formula  body work in the future.

I am toying with the idea of using a standard tank with one of Bobas CF single seat units but my frame has angled shocks and the old upright shock mounts are still in place. I dont want to cut  them off as they are part of the mounting for the formula body work.

This means use angled shocks and have ugly brackets poking out at the side of the seat unit - not a good look.

Or relocate the shocks to the upright position - are the positions interchangeable with standard length shocks???

The other problem is that Boba does not do a long version of his seat unit, though I can probably get round this by lengthening the padded part of the seat.

Or go the whole hog and go for the SFC type long tank. But this this too long a reach for comfort.

As I said decisions decisions...........

Can't and won't take any of your decisions off your hands, but the shock position is interchangeable... :D

If you go with the upright shock mounting you could move the lower mount on the swing arm back I have seen some of the sfc's like this and I think the space frame triple. the swing arm on my special is like this I bought a chainguard for it and it would not mount on the lower shock bolt .

Mounting the shocks upright and/or moving the lower mounts above/behind the axle increases spring stiffness.  To retain comfort, if there was any to begin with, a spring with a slightly lower spring rate would be needed to compensate.

It's all about physics and levers...

I think I would go the whole hog and go for the SFC type long tank and the single seat unit that would look ACE  8)  Is the seat height higher than the std seat height on those formulas? they look quite tall.

It seems on mine the bottom spring seats are about 10mm lower than std marzzo ones and longer progressive springs fitted

yes  - the seat is raised by a removable metal bracket that fits on the the upright shock mounts - which is why I need to retain these.
