Side cover doesn't come off

This hasn't happened to me before. The left side cover of my 500  doesn't come off. Looking at it, it probably has been there since new, so almost 40 years.
I don't want to damage anything, so does any of you have a tip to release it?

Ciao, Hans

The starter prod won't work on the little twins...

Probably some DPO has fitted the cover with gasket goo.  Carefull knocks with a hide or plastic mallet might get it dislodged.  If all else fails, drive a thin spatula or putty knife through the gasket at several points, it will give up eventually.

On stuff that has been glued together with silicone stuff [Three Bond, Ultra Grey Etc.] I've found that tapping somewhat firmly and quickly around the joint with a soft faced hammer will loosen the bond. The idea is to get it to vibrate a little and that loosens the sticky, if you can pull on it while you tap it that helps too. OK come on pervs!

Why is that Piet?

'cos the crank isn't supported in the cover.

The clutch cover of the big twins and triples carries an outrigger bearing for the crank, the (quite commonly) out-of-round crank will push the cover off when the starter is deployed.

'cos the crank isn't supported in the cover. Oh, I wasn't aware of that.

But was aware of that.

Thanks, I'll be able to sleep at night now.
