Sidestand bracket

A lot has been posted about side stands but I want to give my experience. I bought a standard straight bracket from Alumacraft early this summer to fit on my Mirage 1980 and a used ZX-6R side stand. It worked well, yes you have to reach down and let the side stand go by the center stand tang but it’s no major problem. When I park, it just slides by. I now wanted to do the same on my Jota 1980 and then I bought the newly designed bracket from Alumacraft, Marzocchi variant and put on the Mirage as my Jota have a modified center stand, it has a more narrow cross bar, so the tang is further in. I also bought another ZX-6R stand, now year model 2004, the first was 2010 if I recall right. The 2004 is slightly longer but I think the new bracket require a longer stand. Not easy to do it right as it’s difficult to find anything about side stand length when buying on the net. However the new shaped bracket doesn’t do the trick, the tang still interfere and don’t make it easier to fiddle with. It also fit much worse and need force to align the foot peg and engine mount bolts. So I must say the original straight bracket is better.

Now to my Jota, it has of course rear set and the cross over, let side shift. I haven’t yet got it to work, turned the engine gear lever outside in but the nut to lock the lever to the cross over shaft hits the transmission cover. I will try to find a thinner nut but not sure if it works. Any recommendation? Seems like some have cut threads in the lever.

Regards Lars

Lars, I have the same Laverda as you have, a 1980 Mirage. I found the flat Bushman bracket caused both stands to bind together when extending.
I have the new type bracket that works very well. You can see I have trimmed the right side of the Kawasaki mounting bracket to give clearance for the centre stand tang. There’s not a lot of clearance but it works. Not sure if this helps but here’s some photos of my set up. The rear sets make it a bit harder to see the bracket.

Thanks, interesting, looks like your centre stans folds higher up. My centre stand stops with the tang below the sidestand. I will look further.

Lars, the centre stand on my Mirage folds up till the stand rests on the rubber stopper on the frame. If it helps, I can take some photos of the centre stand tang for you to compare. There does seem to be small variations in the stand tangs, whether through owner mods, damages or fabrication. I can’t think this item would have been seen as dimensionally critical. Tangs on the S2 and J120 are slightly different again from what I’ve seen.

Sorry for late response, I havn't had time for my bikes for some days. I have a very similar situations as you but my centre stand stops a bit ealier on the right side rubber stop which seems a bit bent. Its as well very close where you trimmed a bit on the sidestand. It's likely because the centre stand bushes are worn and the spring pushes the stand forward. But with some small adjustments it now works on my Mirage!

Now I have to fix my Jota, the main problem is the left side gear shift.

Thanks for you input.

An update, I now fixed the gearshift cross over system by turning the left side lever for the crossover axle as I showed in ealier picture. Made a smaller nut to avoid interference with the transmission cover and put an additional washer behind the foot peg to move it 1-2mm out. Now it shifts freely.

However I still get interference between my centre stand tang and the side stand (moved over the old strait bracket from the Mirage to the Jota). That's even if my centre stand has been modified to be more narrow.

Conclusion, I change my mind, the new bracket is better choice than the old strait even if both have some challenges to be perfect.
