Paul Leclair had a nasty accident when one of his wheels collapsed. He had fabricated spacers out of aluminium and one had not been up to the job. If you do a forum search you will likely find the thread.
Maybe it would be better to use lighter weight rims/spokes or shave the hub down?

Hello Stefan.
I have done this before
Laverda SFC 750 R Laverda endurance racer 1972
I have not experienced any problems.

I've always made my wheel spacers out of good quality aluminium - never had a problem - in fact the old Astralite wheels are supplied with aluminium spacers/tophats that fit in their bearings. If you try and save extra weight by making O.D. of spacer smaller - then you may get problems. My original spaceframe was a heavy old beast - so,if the copies are as heavy - then lightening is very desirable - best of luck with it Peder - Regards - Phil

No problem here with alloy spacers either, provided dimensions are correct.

If tightening torques are observed, half-decent light alloy will be more than sufficient.  It's when Mr.Hamfist gets his grubby little fingers to the bike that problems come up!

If a half-decent light alloy will work you can use magnesium alloy tube and save another 30% of weight.  8)

Got a length of 8 x 1 Mg tubing here, doubt if it will be up to the job...

Might get to use it when I convert my triple to pushrods.:D

Funny old stuff magnesium (bloody light though and really useful in many applications). I remember being halted at a roundabout, just outside Oxford, when an expensive sports car came past on three wheels, with sparks coming off the fourth hub. He managed to stop in time, unlike his loose wheel, that came bouncing past us both in a huge plume of fire  :o. I assumed it was magnesium....so don't overtighten those nuts onto your magnesium spacers, don't think it likes friction :P

:o That's going to be at the forefront of technology!

Are you going with those trick wooden spoked wheels too, carbon is "sooo last week", don't you think?

There is Ally and there is Ally,  just as Steel and Steel,  A bit like looking at a moped and saying "Bikes" can never do the "Ton"  ;)

Here's my version of the external spacers for Lothars' gixxer front wheel that's going into his Motoplast build.

No speedo drive, so spacers required each side of the wheel.  RH spacer has steel inlay against which the axle will bear, as per original in the speedo drive housing.

Internal spacer also alloy, but not as pretty as I'm the last one to see it... :D

Oh, Lothar, you can pick up the wheel if you like!
