Spark plugs for Mirage

I've been using NGK B8ES for forever. I decided to treat the Mirage to a new set but found the local parts houses don't carry that particular plug. I was also told the part number has been superceeded, although he did not say what the new number is. What's going on here? Leaving Champion plugs aside, what is the current best practice in sparkers for a Mirage 1200TS?

I changed from NGK to Denso W24ES-U plugs as I started to get problems with a few NGK's straight out of the box. There was talk of a lot of inferior copies about. Denso's have been fine.

"Best sparkers on a triple .... is at night, cranked right over to the right dragging the alternator cover along the bitumen."

NAH! that's ally on tarmac, leaves a nice silver line on new tarmac, but not sparks, the best is the primary drive adjuster dome nut on the left, steel give actual sparks!
CLEM

ps top street cred tip, touch your angle grinder on the nut, and while your at it, do the chicken strips as well

Nology. Part number 'LOS'. Silver conductor=stronger spark evidently. Don't stay fouled if you leave enrichment on too long.
Twice the price but worth it since you don't need 8 of them. You might find them under Nology's Ebay name Performancedepotvalue. I can get them direct with a decent size order, since I'm also in CA. Their Awesome coils too. Best pricing are through Ebay for small orders.

I'd suggest doing some research before believing the manufacturer's claims. There is an interesting review on Amazon.

Cheers,

I think PK used to make sparks off the generator itself, on the right hand side.
Phot's kinda grainy but you can see his commitment.Peter 'PK' Davies, Cadwell Park '77.jpgBike Mag 1 PK Ground Cover.jpg

Similar look on Yamaha XS1100s after a four hour proddy race. Alternator covers were almost ground away to the cases at an angle of 45 deg! It looked to me like they were hollow (ie no alternator inside) ... but that would have been illegal!

I've recently found that B8ES's are no longer so easy to find at typical auto stores. In Oz they are available from supercheapauto (our most prolific chain) but you have to order them in. I recently stocked up on 3 boxes of 10 from Sparesbox.com.au which is a major online autoparts seller and thus hopefully sources from the official importer.
Don't buy from no-name sellers on ebay/gumtree, that's where the ripoffs definitely end up. That said, I've seen a few ripoffs sourced from ebay and could easily spot that they were fakes. They just had that typical Chinese 'almost-but-not-quite-right' look about everything from the box to various aspects of the plug.

I was wondering the same thing myself Steve. Looks like it might be something to do with the (very) rear-set footrests. I'm guessing it provides a range of footrest mounting positions.

What's the cast aluminium bracket? Is that going to the SA pivot or the old footpeg hole? Haven't seen that before.
Full picture gives a better view of the rearset mounting. Clamped to the front footrest and rear footrest mounting points. You can see the, unused, forward mounting hole.

Hi Steve, these are Cinque Anelli rearsets. Cinque Anelli was a motorcycle dealer (also LAVERDA) and producer of equipment in Milano. I had a set like this. Sold it years ago, because the pegs are placed very high and very far back - see my pic! Ciao, Gert

Interesting - so PK Davies' Jota in this form isn't a production bike. On closer inspection I see it also has a steering damper and what definitely look like non-Marzo throwaway shocks.

Spaghetti rules? Bend 'em till they suit you?

At least he couldn't have been disqualified for missing horns, as once happed at the Castrol 6H!;)

Obviously Corte& Cosso shocks on the rear of PK`s Jota,my Mirage came with them as standard.Replaced them after about 50,000 miles with Marzo Strada`swhich were terrible, oversprung and underdamped, starting leaking after about 2 weeks, they were supposed to be re-buildable and I can understand why.Replaced them with Dial-a Rides which were much better and lasted about 100,000 miles before the damping went on those.
Heard that Slaters ground a bevel on the generator rotor to give PK more cornering clearance after he had worked his way through the cover! Also regarding Avon series rules, apparently Phil Usher (RD400) said Montjuics would come past him on the straights then change up a gear so he went to Terry Beckett with the engine and hardly lost a race afterwards.I think Slaters quietly withdrew the Monty after that.
Also Roy Armstrong (Guzzi LeMans) fitted Fiat valve springs which gave him 10,000 rpm instead of the 8300 max he could otherwise get out of it.
